This is lovely and I adore the glowing effect. Very gothic ^^ Is it all in pencil?

Very beautiful...mysterious and inquieting, it really looks like the illustration on some occult book
Lavinia and the old Whateley are exactly how I imagined them, and Wilbur...well, maybe you did him a little more good-looking, but he's awesome..he and his family has the true fascination of the Unknown

thanks! i know the story described him as obviously inhuman in some way but for some reason i pictured his face more like "slightly off" just some minor features that will make people feel uneasy like a certain look in his eyesΒ

Having once had the opportunity to depict the same family, I must commend you on your great interpretation.Β  The characters feel very real and authentic, but there's something about the tone and style which really conveys their creepy and otherworldly aspects.

where is your interpretation? cant find it on your page (love your black and white stuff btw) i was fascinated by them because of how much dedication they put into their plans (at least the old mr whateley) if you think about how an unknown family in a redneck village was able to create such a huge threat to humanity and how deep rooted their insanity and conviction to their witchcraft must have been.. i would love to read more about the back story of the grandpa. just like there was a lot of backstory for joseph curwen. i think what he did was even more insane than curwen because he raised an actual offspring from a god.

My interpretation is not so worthy of being included in my online portfolio.Β  I did it back in the 90's, when I was had less of a handle on Lovecraft and art in general.Β  If you have an older edition of the Call of Cthulhu RPG by Chaosium, then you might find it (it's one of the full page chapter illos).Β  I now find it too amateurish and cartoonish for my tastes.

Like you, I see a lot of compelling intrigue surrounding this family, they have something human that a lot of the Lovceraftian 'villains' often lack for me.Β  I attempted Wilbur once more with the recent 'Miskatonic University' book cover:Β  fav.me/d4aolt0 I was really inspired by the idea of how passionate he was about his mission, and what an intense wave of emotion it could be for him to finally acquire a copy of the Necronomicon- so entranced that he could be extremely vulnerable to the guard dog.Β  I felt the execution didn't match the feeling I was trying to convey.Β  One of these decades I'll get it right!

cool picture!Β
i was fascinated a lot by the whole "cult" aspect. that mixture of religious symbolism like robes, shrines and then the gnarly, foul aspects of what is happening beneath that.. like the birth of the god`s spawns mixed with animals or humans. dunwich horror had maybe the worst of that.. if you really think it trough till the end what that meant for ms whateley.
i tend to really get lost in those kind of storys.. where others would say yeah thats a crazy story i think about every consequenzes and causes of stuff that happens XDΒ

Thanks!

I think you're on to something about this story, because few of Lovecraft's stories seem to depict the 'villain' through a human perspective- or at least something we can relate to on any level.Β  Usually it is the human 'hero' reflecting on the inhuman aspects of the opposition.Β  But, with Dunwich (and perhaps a few others like Charles Dexter Ward) we have some human qualities in the villains, and I think that makes for a more compelling story.Β  It is much less cut-and-dry, and much more like real life.

keziah mason could be amongst those "human" villains, although she might have crossed the border due to her dimmension-travelling and actually colaborating with that avatar of nyarlathotep, wich makes her insanely creepy as well.

True, and I found it harder to sympathize with her as much as some of the other human antagonists.Β  I think it is the passionate drive to attain a goal which I find relate-able, even though I might not appreciate their goals.
