Charles Dance, no matter what he plays, is always a charismatic character. You always believe that he could lead an kingdom. Or in this case an Empire.

For sure! He's got that hawk-like face that I think would be perfectly fitting.Β

Now Charles Dance as Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV is an interesting choice, I wouldn't mind seeing that.Β

Personally I'd see Charles Dance as Gurney but that's me, very nice though.

I think Gurney could be played well by a multitude of actors, though if the book describes him as an ugly lump of a man, it narrows it down a bit. It's definitely open to interpretation though!Β
Thanks!

I really like this, as the other Dune works you did. But I can't help but love Giancarlo Giannini as Saddam COrrino IV in the mini series. Though I really love the crown you did.Β

Oh, you must! It's really good and does the best job I think for a film adaption. Some things.........it's easy to pick at for sure. But I thought they did great on the stillsuits and the emperor's war uniform was pretty much a Shah's uniform, which I liked. But yes, you must see it, and again thank you for your Dune fan art. They're incredible.Β

It's interesting you pictured this guy as shaddam. I pictured him as Leto the first with the atreides "hawk-like" nose. Nonetheless, nicely done.

I absolutely LOVE your Dune work, and this interpretation with an apparent Charles Dance as the Emperor is perhaps the greatest visual interpretation of the character ever.

Either a good miniseries, or a 3 part film adaptation by a director like Peter Jackson would be nice.Β

TuffK In reply to Deimos-Remus [2014-05-06 14:47:09 +0000 UTC]
I like Peter Jackson, but he just doesn't know when to cut things out. Β King Kong was 3 hours, the RotK had like 4 endings, and The Hobbit never had enough material for a trilogy. Β But there is so much material in the Dunieverse that it could probably be done. Β
I still think Game of Thrones is one of the most faithful book to tv adaptation (or book to any screen for that matter) ever made. Β Something like that would do wonders for Dune, and they wouldn't have to condense too much.

Deimos-Remus In reply to TuffK [2014-05-06 16:31:40 +0000 UTC]
I agree a bit there, but I think a long film or two would suit Dune well, it being comprised of 3 internal books and all. My problem with Jackson lately is more about his use of CGI. Smaug looked great, but wish they'd go back to practical effects. I think Jackson is good at directing group ensembles, probably better than anyone. What really impressed me about LOTR was the fact that they all had huge casts, but gave equal or the right amount of importance to each character.Β
Even though Shows lately have been bridging the gap in terms of production value, they're becoming more and more like movies, I still like the prospect of films over shows. There's just something I like better about a single session experience as opposed to having to get invested in an entire show. I've been late to the game on several shows, like Breaking Bad (which was great) and Dexter (which is alright), but haven't watched any of Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, the show format in my opinion just doesn't interest me as much. :/

I'm not a "TV series" guy myself, but I would certainly check out the game of thrones show if you're a dune fan. The similarities are more than passing and there is a common feel between both stories.

I know this comment is like a year old, but I would actually recommend reading A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin (the books series that GoT is based on). I've just finished reading Dune, and one of the first things I noticed is that George RR Martin definitely took a lot of inspiration from Frank Herbert, even if the setting is significantly different. The show is good (although it did decline in quality a bit in season 5), but it really tends to gloss over all the rich world building and over-simplify the political intrigue.Β

Yeah, there definitely needs to be a blend of that philosophical and intellectual side with the arresting visuals. Nothing block-buster like, but there still needs to be tons of visual intrigue.Β

Think a miniseries works best for it. More time for character development and really the tech of the universe is like a steampunk game of thrones.Β
