Description Saw The Witch opening day a couple of days ago, and man. It was incredible. Best horror film I've seen in recent memory and one that is equally as effective as an intense character drama. Robert Eggers really knocked it out of the park! It didn't resort to cheap jumpscares or thrills, but rather gets under your skin for a deeply unsettling and thought provoking experience.

I cannot recommend it enough for fans of slow-burn, Kubrick, Tarkovsky and Bergman influenced films, and I'm glad to say that it lived up to the hype and then some. For those expecting cheap, thrills and chills, fire and brimstone monster thriller (something it is not), do those who want to watch it a favor and don't ruin it for them at the theater. This film has gotten so many reviews stating that mainstream horror fans and filmgoers have been ruining it by laughing or scoffing at it while the movie was playing. Please don't be one of those people.

Piece was done with ink, and some collaging of old Witch Trial papers for the text.

One of the best horror movies no doubt. I also like your drawing a lot.

I would expect to find a piece like this in some weather-beaten seventeenth century tome on the occult. Great work!

Super cool! I love the woodcut feel. And the fact that you took the letters out of old witch craft trial papers just kicks the awesome level up a notch.

Thanks sis! It was nice trying out something different! That was a last minute idea, so glad I decided to do that!

Funny enough, they played a preview of the Conjuring 2 before the movie, so I began to worry it would be like that cheap type of horror movie with the nonsensical exorcisms and goofy ghouls popping out. Instead, this movie really got under my skin with the eerie atmosphere and the intense imagery, this movie effectively made witches scary again. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who wants to see a horror movie with effort and love put into it, rather than those lazy cookie cut out "scary" movies.

Awesome!

You know, I wasn't initially that interested in this movie, but I live in New England and I went hiking over the weekend. Being mostly alone in the woods, and seeing all the old stone walls and house foundations, and just thinking about people having lived out there...man, I really wanna see the movie now!

Thanks man!

It's a movie that you have to be in the right mindset to really enjoy, so if you go in without any preconceived idea of how the movie will be, odds are you'll like it. I think many just didn't expect their expectations to be so subverted. It's definitely a divisive film among horror buffs already, that's for sure. The atmosphere alone is incredible, so I think you'll dig it!

It's my favorite movie of the year so far, that's for certain! My advice is to go in without any sort of preconceived idea of how the film will play out. Many horror fans were disappointed with the film and deemed it as boring because it's not a typical horror film, but again, I loved it for that.

Hm. I might have to watch this. Always preferred the slow haunting fear over jumpscares and gore and stuff

The "fire and brimstone monster thriller" has interested me. Watching all the previews and whatnot has done nothing for me, but this may. Does the monster part imply that there actually is one?

Deimos-Remus In reply to Sylizar [2016-02-22 06:56:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was saying that it's NOT the fire and brimstone monster thriller that people were expecting. I will say that the marketing made it seem like a more accessible and typical horror film, but it's actually a very intimate character drama with a horror backdrop/setting. I don't want to give anything away if possible; The titular Witch does show up, but it's more akin to Alien's approach, as in "what you don't see is the most horrifying". It definitely has great supernatural elements to it, but it's not a creature feature.

Ah, ok, my bad. Well, we'll see if it gets my interest or not whenever it shows up here.

No problem. As I've said in other comments, I'd just say to go into the film without any sort of solidified expectation of what it will be like. Mainstream horror fans expected something really gory and immediately frightening, and ended up thinking it was boring and have since panned it. But, if you go in open to the idea of watching a subtly uneasy and unnerving, intense drama, you might appreciate it. Depends on the viewer.

Unfortunately many of the aforementioned mainstream horror fans show their disdain for the film while it's still playing, ruining the experience for everyone. It seems to have brought out the worst in many filmgoers...

That's always a shame, people need to calm their shit sometimes. Anyhow, regardless of what I think now, it'll definitely be worth a rental.

Deimos-Remus In reply to Sylizar [2016-03-01 01:46:10 +0000 UTC]

Yup!

It is a divisive film, so keep that in mind. Not everyone will like it, as it's more akin to a slow-moving arthouse flick than a mainstream horror film, but if you're open to those kinds of films, it's totally worth a watch!

Sylizar In reply to Deimos-Remus [2016-03-01 02:05:20 +0000 UTC]

I'm always willing to try. Just a little disappointed that maybe some things I thought may be in the movie aren't in it. But otherwise, yeah, it's something to look into.
