gehenna was a literal garbage dump outside of jerusalem, well known to Jesus' listeners. Jesus made frequent use of illustrations, parables, metaphors, even hyperbole when teaching (yes, he was the best!) in any case, gehenna was a fitting metaphor for eternal destruction, since fire destroys completely. in other words, eternal death with no hope of a resurrection. further study will help to establish a clear link between heathen mythologies related to the underworld and Christendom's version, though like you say, more information now available is causing many to rethink hell. interestingly, the current official teaching on hell from Catholicism is that hell is not a burning, fiery place of torment, but rather eternal separation from God. interesting, hmmm?

true, no one can fully comprehend heaven, except upon the realization. however, the english word hell is a poor translation of the greek word hades, which in it's most basic sense simply means "the abode of the dead." the notion of an underworld of eternal torment is of heathen origin, later grafted into so-called Christianity. the Bible teaches that the dead are "... conscious of nothing at all..." (Ecclesiastes 9:5-10). it would be worth your time to do the research, you being the studious type and all. regarding stanza 2 line 1. thinking it would be more correct to drop the possessive form of heaven to simply heaven? unless you wanted to change it to heaven's loft?
