Description

Nicomo Cosca

'And here they come,' mused Nicomo Cosca, grinning out at the scene. He alone seemed untouched by fear. He has either an iron nerve or a leaden imagination. Lazing in a drinking-hole or waiting for death all seems to be one to him. He was standing with one foot up on the parapet, forearms crossed on his knee, half-full bottle dangling from one hand. The mercenary's battle dress was much the same as his drinking gear. The same sagging boots, the same ruined trousers. His one allowance for the dangers of the battlefield was a black breastplate, etched front and back with golden scrollwork. It too had seen better days, the enamel chipped, the rivets stained with rust. But it must once have been quite the masterpiece.

Before They Are Hanged / Joe Abercrombie

Beside extra magnificent inquisitor Glokta, this guy is one of my favorite characters of entire Abercrombie’s world.

Totally! There's so many killer quotes from Cosca in that book,
which make him irresistible. And the thing with the goat...man, that
was hilarious.

Read 'Half a War'............... Discover BRIGHT YILLING.

Perfect rendition of Cosca the debauchee. Love it!

Awesome work!

He and Glokta were pretty awesome characters.  I just started the 3rd book of his "Shattered Sea" trilogy.
I think you'd enjoy making Thorn Bathu and Grom Gil Gorm from that series.    (Unless you already have! )

Tnx!

No, I haven't read "Shattered Sea" yet, although the trilogy is on my shelf.
With the current reading list, I hope I'll start with it till the end of the year.
I bet it's damn good, as every Abercrombie's book.

May I suggest the Riyria Revelations, then the Riyria Chronicles and finally The age of Myth by Michael J. Sullivan?
They're beautifully written, has amazing characters with wonderful character arcs and oh man, the story! The universe! I could gush for hours.
I think you'd love them. (If I've already suggested them feel free to delete my comment)

You may, ofc. I heard about Sullivan books before, but

I finish some books which waiting for far too long on my shelf.
Tnx for suggestion!

I would end up giving the plot away though.
Happy to suggest them!

I love the way you did the background in this picture, the turrets have a sense of height to them. I find your ability to convey depth without shading to be an intriguing skill set.
Nicomo(?) looks like a guy I wouldn't want to meet at any time of the day. A little crazy too, but anyone who doesn't fear death is a little crazy.

Oh, old Nicomo is quite funny & hilarious character. Beside the fact
that man is well trained alcoholic & mercenary captain, he has
some hell of a parts in books.
One of memorable quotes: “Severed heads,' Cosca was explaining, 'never go out of fashion. Used sparingly and with artistic, sensibility,They can make a point a great deal more eloquently then those still attached.”

And, tnx! Glad you like the depth and all.

That's what I'm talking about.
Plot of "The First Law" trilogy is really amazing. It's a hard core
grimdark fantasy, so lot of swearing, dark humor and bloody scenes
would be there.

We'll have to see if it tickles my really picky tastes.
But dark humour, bloody scenes are interesting to read about so I might read it just for Nicomo and those.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2017-07-03 22:58:11 +0000 UTC]

It was.
But you truly don't want to live with the heroes of these books, it's just too depressing
Weirdly, in french, the title was renamed as "Last quarrel", when the very quote that is used for the original title is from Louis XIV. (Even though it's technically written in latin on the barrels of cannons : "Ultima Ratio Regum"). It's kinda sad, because it fits the ending oh so very well. Meh, enough with my complaint !

Keep up those delightful portraits of all those fantasy antiheroes

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2017-07-04 08:35:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes, after all, everything ends in sorrow and depression for these
heroes.
Btw, did you know that Abercrombie is writing a new "The First Law"
trilogy, and it will be actually continuation of the story, with the same
characters? That's what I'm waiting for!

For sure! More antiheroes to come in future.

I have yet to read Best Served Cold, The Heroes and Red Country, which I have purchased this week.
But I think I'll finish them before the end of summer, so I'll be very ready for a sequel trilogy after that

I do worry a little about how many of them will be still alive when the story begins, as they are not stories kind with their characters

have read "Best Served Cold", and all I can say - it's a bloody

Yeah, that could be quite a problem. But, I trust in writer and

I have started Red Country while I was waiting for my bookstore to get a new "Best Served Cold".

And Abercrombie definitely likes to make old "friends" cross paths in his stories.

I have resisted the urge to read more by reading one of the most talented french speaking fantasy author I know, but now that I've got my hands on Best Served Cold, it's a matter of days before I've read everything

I'll tell you how it is !

I finished Best Served Cold.
And it was incredible.

I realize that Abercrombie real talent lies in the fact that you can root for every character, even when they start opposing each other (Friendly and Shivers, at the end of the book).

Now I've started The Heroes, and howdy, you should definitely read it too. I find it to be the most impressive in terms of raw style, and it is as bloody and funny as the others (it's one big battle after all)

I ain't going to say: "I told you so."
JK, glad you like the book.

Yeah, characterization is excellent. Each one of them
has something that reader just must like. And Abercrombie
is doing that job perfectly.

Sure, I'm planning to read "The Heroes" this year.
My 'to read' list is a bit long, but I hope I'll manage to read
it soon.
Btw, hope to hear your 'non spoiler' review too.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2017-08-03 00:01:19 +0000 UTC]

Finished The Heroes today.

It was even bloodier and desperate than the previous books
And you meet again with some people. It's definitely a staple of Abercrombie's books.
The feeling it gives reminds me a lot of another series of books : the Chronicles of the Black Company.
It drips the same kind of ironic despair, you wonder how they can keep on their lives, apart from the survival instinct (which, in both series, is quite a useful skill). And yet, you laugh or grin often while reading it, because life is just one big cosmic joke, a perfect example of gallows humor.

So, now I will get to the last one, Red Country, I'll tell you how it is too

And I know perfectly what it is to have a big "to read" pile of books.
There's currently something like fifty books waiting to be read in my room xD

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2017-08-04 07:54:27 +0000 UTC]

Already? Wow, you're a quick one.

Damn, that sounds great! Though, I don't have any doubt in Abercrombie skills.
Similar to Glen Cook's "The Chronicles of the Black Company" series? I see. Read the first three books some years ago, but I didn't like writing style. It was so confusing and hard to digest. Although, my favorite writer Steven Erikson (Malazan author) named him for his biggest influence, even dedicated a book to Glen.
You know there will be a tv show based on "The Black Company" soon? That would be interesting.

Sure, mate! From what I heard, "Red Country" is his best book. Enjoy!

Yeah, so you know the problem about it. Just wish there's more time for reading.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2017-08-04 12:51:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, my reading skills were rusty, until my Internet line encountered some problems two months ago.
It appears that putting all my Internet time into reading time shook down the rust pretty fast
Now I'm reading a book per week at average (and I try to take enough time to read too).

Almost everyone that started the Black Company books said at one point that it was confusing. It's quite an understatement. It's VERY confusing, because of the point of view chosen. But I kept on reading them, and then reread the first ones, and now it's a lot easier to grasp
Even though there are even more confusing narrators later (oh God, Murgen, why you so damn mad).
But in the end, it was a really important series to me, and its conclusion was phenomenal : the last plot twist left me in both tears and laughters.
And no, I had no idea a tv show was in the works. I'll remain cautious on this one. It's a very long series, with quite a darkness to it and a lot of weird elements. To have some credibility, it will be costly. So, time will tell, but I'm not optimist on this one.
If HBO or Netflix decided to back it up, maybe (they have the budget).

I'll read the Malazan Book of the Fallen one day. It's on my "to read when I finish everything else" list hahaha

I'll finish Red Country today or tomorrow, so you'll have my last review of Abercrombie next time

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2017-08-05 09:28:49 +0000 UTC]

That's great! I'm a bit slower reader, must admit.
English is not my native language, so I need a bit more time then a week for such a big books. But I manage to finished it in time.

Yeah, I had a feeling like there was a couple of different writers at the time, and Glen said once he was writing on brakes when he worked in some factory...at least in the time for the first three books.
Dunno, for now it seems IM Global Television will take care of it.  www.tor.com/2017/04/24/glen-co… We'll see.

Oh, you MUST read Malazan series. It's my top of the genre.
Series is definitely not for the epic fantasy beginners, but an old and experienced fantasy reader would enjoy in it. Totally different of anything I've been reading.

No prob. Just take your time.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2017-08-05 15:14:32 +0000 UTC]

Oh, don't be impressed, I'm not reading them in their original language either !
I read their french translations (there is some really good translators for the fantasy genre in my native language, the most renowned one being Patrick Couton, a man that accomplished something of a miracle : keeping all the wordplay and jokes there is in Terry Pratchett books).

Yep, Cook did the first three books while working on a Ford assembly line.
A cruel reminder of improductive I can be

Aye, we'll see. But after things like the Preacher adaptation, or worse (Legend of the Seeker...), I suppose one has to be realistic about these things

Oh, I'll do it, I never forget a series I want to read, even if it takes me years to start them. Right now, I want to finish The Witcher and Mistborn !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2017-08-06 08:56:47 +0000 UTC]

I see. Unfortunately, Serbian publishers are not that dedicated when it comes to new titles...we must wait a couple of years for a book to be translate & published, so it's better option to just buy original books on English, than to wait for god knows how much time. For example, "The Heroes" are published here just this year, a month ago.

Yeah, Ford it is. Just imagine the dude writing on every break.   The funny thing is that Glen said later he was actually more productive while writing in factory, then writing at home when he become famous writer. Insane.

Sure. It could be great, or it could be butchered like GOT/ASOIAF thing.

Great! Malazan is just masterpiece of the genre, and it would be a bad thing to miss it.
Oh, The Witcher? First two books are amazing, the rest not so, really. IMO, ofc.
On the other hand, Mistborn is a killer trilogy!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2017-08-06 12:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Oh, damn, The Heroes was published in France in... 2013.
I understand your stance on the subject then

Definitely insane. But at the same time, to some people, writing is a way to escape.
I remember Arturo Perez Reverte (a spanish writer, who was a war reporter before that, sorry for the explanation if you already know the man ) saying something like that.
Maybe because he needed less to escape, he was less efficient ?

Oh, GOT wasn't butchered until season 5. And even then, I still enjoy it as some kind of "alternative ending" to the books.
But GoT has a rather colossal budget.

I won't, I promise
Well, I'll tell you if I liked the third one or not then !
Mistborn is really cool, Sanderson has quite the gift to create coherent systems of magic.

To conclude, Red Country was awesome. I can't tell if it's the best book of the series, but I'm damn sure it's a very good book. Feels like Unforgiven made babies with Blood Meridian in a fantasy universe.

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2017-08-07 11:32:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, total bummer. For the bigger irony, chronology of publishing is upside down as well. "The Shattered Sea" trilogy is published before "The Heroes", and "Red Country" is announced for the next year. Thank god for Book Depository.com and original books.

No, I haven't heard about the man, but it has some sense. I'm not the writer, but I guess that's got to be some kind of escape. Even for a short time.

Dunno, IMO it was butchered from the very beginning, and season after season things just getting worse. Well, if Martin doesn't want to write the end, HBO will do that instead him, for sure.

It's a deal!

Great review! I heard it has some of that western movies flavor.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2017-08-10 10:51:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh. I did not know Bookdepository.com. Now I'm taking a look.
(My grasp of the english language might allow me to read those books )

I'm an amateur writer, and I can assure that writing is a good way to escape your thoughts.
Or drown in them, you never know until it's too late

Well, I do hope that Martin is going to be more original that HBO. Or at least, a lot more subtle.
And that he will release the Winds of Winter soon enough. I don't want him to pull a Frank Herbert or a Robert Jordan.

As a spaghetti westerns aficionado (the conventional ones, not so much), it IS a western movie. It just happens to be a fantasy book too

It's a great site, and you can find almost everything there. Plus the fact you just need to pay price of the book, nothing more. No taxes and all, just the book. A heaven on Earth.

I see. Must admit, it's similar situation with illustrators.

Let's hope so. Seems he needs forever to finish that book.
Yeah, the thing with "Dune" & "Wheel of Time" sequels was bad. Although, I heard Sanderson did a very good job with WoT last two books.

So, great it is.

I took the first volume of The Lies of Locke Lamora out of spite

Oh, you too sometimes drown in your drawings ?

Well, to have Sanderson finishing Jordan series was a good thing to compensate a bad one.
Dune sequels were not all so lucky.
