Description Vector trace of Murakumo from Kantai Collection.
Original sketch by "pennel" .

This is my entry for the 5th Double-you contest following the theme of coloring a monochrome image. I like the result but overall, it's not ambitious enough so I'll work on a second entry. Traced using Illustrator CS6. Exported with Photoshop CS6. The base image was in black and white meaning the coloring and shading were improvised. Most of the lineart is done with filled shapes with the only exception being her antennas to give them a mechanical feel.

Line art : The Lines are smooth and consistent, good use of strokes on the floating antenna things, The added lines on the shirt work well in giving what would other wise be a big blank space a subtle sense of depth.

Colours : The colouring is nice and consistent there is minimum banding and the shadowing stays consistent, the eyes stand out nicely along with the shading on the antenna part which gives off a gradient mesh feel when it is only a simple gradient ,Though looking at the source image the ring of small lines around the top of the head look like they would have been better if made into a shine effect on the hair rather than simple black lines.

Technique: The vector is well done, the use of radial and linear gradients as well as clipping masks is well executed, i can't really think of much more that could be done with the image as it not all that spectacular and being a portrait there is limited material to work with.

Personal Favourite Feature: I liked how you added additional subtle lines to the shirt it helps keep the eyes from focusing on the large blank white area without being too out of place.

Overall: As a whole the vector is very solid and the techniques used are well executed unfortunately it does not make my top 3. i like to look at a vectors worth in terms of how someone would utilize it and unless you are a big fan of Murakumo/Kantai collection this vector has a fairly limited use, still great work and i look forward to your future vectors.

Thanks for the feedback. Also, I agree with the last part, the reason it failed was probably that it was too limited. I really liked the original sketch so it was still a fun one to do.

I just had to vote low because the antennas needed more love.  The linework was great and then... the antennas with noob mistakes, it felt like they were an afterthought.

I agree that the antennas had a little less depth to them then the rest of the image.

It isn't so much that though as it was the linework not lining up.  Look at the dark gray parts, the front side and back corner make no sense in 3D.  The back 2 "cubes", in the middle, have corners where the lines don't meet. Here is what the antennae should look like, compensate for simplicity of course. kancolle.wikia.com/wiki/Muraku…

I really liked the rest, that just hurt it so much overall since they are such a huge focus.

Oh I see what you mean now yeah that is a perspective error and should have been fixed.

Ah, I should've used these official artworks for reference, instead I picked through multiple fanarts that all had the antennas drawn differently. Guess this means I'll have to practice doing more mecha.

Honestly I would have just used her right one as reference, it was pretty good in many ways.  The light on the underside of the block is about the only thing in the design that I had to mark down for; basically I graded down for mistakes in the perspective and lineart mot meeting in corners.  The character part is great.

Lineart: The lineart is smooth and consistent, the use of lightly colored lines in the shirt and the thin black lines in the hair give some character to the image that would be competent but bland without. I also like hair ribbons not having outlines.

Colors: Colors are good if a little boring, the shading appears to stay consistent and I like the eyes

Technique (Complexity of the Image such as shading, Gradients, Mesh,): This is a very good vector with a lot of subtly touches here and there that make it better but there is nothing spectacular about the image it’s a portrait thus its showing a snap shot of a person, unfortunately it’s not that interesting of a snapshot.

Personal Favorite Feature: I like the amount of depth you were able to give the image with the line art and I think that’s the strongest point of this image.

Overall: This image did not make my top 3 while it’s a strongly done image there are much more dynamic and exciting works this time.

Agreed with most of the points. I definitely needed something with a bigger spark than this one.

Yeah, you made up for it with your 2nd entry, I do think on the theme of coloring the image you did well I like how it turned out.
