Description I've played around with creating my own writing systems throughout my life. Krul was the first to be submitted on the internet.

The concept was simple: I wanted to see if I could create an entire alphabet using only a single symbol - in this case, a "curl" - which could be flipped and marked with lines and dots to create a wide variety of possible letter forms. Also, no letter was to have more than 3 "parts" - one main "curl" and one part consisting of one or more dots, lines or combination of the two. There are no seperate case forms and dots are used to seperate words. Krul is written from left-to-right.

The word "krul" is from Afrikaans and means "curl".

This is the earliest version of Krul and is little more than a cipher for English. Modern versions are more phonetic and can be adapted to other languages such as German or toki pona.

I love linguistics too. I used to make up alphabets and I still do to some degree - particularly I like to play with J.R.R. Tolkien's Tengwar script.
