okay so... :,) i wanted this mostly ambiguous and up for interpretation up until the end, so now that we're here lemme explain.

Eregon, as all y'all know, is having a Time. he got angry due to personal issues -- he hates the idea of relying on people, and after he had a moment with Venera at his birthday party he got terrified over the thought of becoming vulnerable enough for friendship. see, to him, it's a weakness -- because he's always gotten hurt when he lets himself care for people, and lets people care for him. typical edgy teen angst, it wasn't a big deal.

unfortunately, Despair is a hell of a thing. it went from what might have been a temporary lapse in judgement to a seemingly permanent stain on his mind. his desire to be strong to himself caused him to lash out at Naomi, someone with whom he'd already sparred, but instead of a spar it was an all out brawl and he lost. then, he fought Estel , who quickly learned about his fear of asphyxiation and abused it to put him in his place.

this event was the turning point for him. Estel terrified him, but he refused to acknowledge his fear and instead opted for rage. isolation. that's where the first pages come into play: Eregon dragged himself back home, and Emileen found him beaten and bloodied. Emileen, being the caring sister she is, wanted to check on him. he denied her help, denied that anything was wrong. she got angry at him for refusing to let her help, and in turn he got angry at her, refusing her hand, threatening her to leave him alone.

he cast out anyone and everyone. he cut ties. burned bridges. he began to hate those around him, even his "best friend" . he didn't want the company of anyone, and he'd prove it with force -- because violence was a wonderful way to get people to understand (as seen with Estel). he broke Marina's hand, cut Lani's hair , even battled with Susi whom he respected. his fury knew no discrimination.

fast forward a little bit. Emileen confronted him once on the battle field and, just like others before her, Eregon lashed out. Emileen was quick to act however and she bound him with her power, and this caused him to snap, screaming at her that he hates her and that he wanted to fight her to show her how strong he is and how much he didn't need her help. Emileen, terrified and saddened by his rage, left him there alone.

this confrontation lingered on Emileen's mind, however, and it only served to drag her down. that, and the revelation of Witches' true natures, only began a swift downward spiral for her. unfortunately, Emileen didn't have many seeds in the first place, so that's where the third page transition comes in. she entered Clio's maze against her better judgement, only to run into Eregon who was still angry over their last encounter. she attempted to bargain with him, claiming she didn't want to fight and that she was only here for something else. Eregon, in return, refused to move. his bargain was that she had to fight him in order to be left alone, because he has to prove his strength to her -- and to himself, as he always wanted to.

but Emileen refused to fight. her one wish was to be able to be useful and help her brother who always seemed to hate her. yet even after she regained her arm, she was unable to do anything. Eregon wouldn't budge, and this was depressing -- resulting in a despair that only served to harm the both of them. however... Emileen was the first to fall.

because at last, she knew she was unable to do anything. her falling to the ground was something Eregon himself wasn't expecting, hence his surprise here. he had no idea how close to the edge she was -- he had no idea the reason she was here was to get a Grief Seed in order to save herself. it didn't matter, though. she's accepted her fate. her grief.

so yes. Emileen is dead.
we've had this planned since like the beginning of the group yo.

funny how Eregon's stages of grief end up with someone else suffering in his place.
