Why do you whimper and whine tonight?

Your eyes and ears closed tight as they are,

Your shiny red ball kept not afar.

As I crouch and stroke your fuzzy black brow,

I wonder what you are dreaming right now.

Of bones, of fresh meat, I could not say--

Perhaps you are chasing cats all day!

Who knows? But your whimpers make me doubt,

Any good dreams I will have to toss out.

Are you alone, in despair, even terrified,

In a nightmare that’s leaving you mortified?

For what reason, lil' pup, tell me, please.

(No, you’re not telling me through that sneeze!)

If it is of a life forsaken on the street,

Know that back home, we're waiting with treats.

Even if in your dream, your owner is missing,

Wake up this moment to find me here sitting.

Is neglected love leaving you upset?

Don’t worry! Tomorrow, we’re seeing the vet!

Sweet ole’ girl, this dream will soon pass,

Forgotten as soon as you roll-over on grass.

And when dawn returns with a new sunrise,

Open your eyes to a wondrous surprise--

When you and I pick up from where we left off,

And race up to the highest hilltop!

And just for this once. . .will I permit,

Your slobbery kisses whilst I submit.

The least I could do for my furry little friend,

Forevermore will our friendship attend. . .
