I was doodling in my sketchbook when I came up with this design and decided to finalize it. I kind of like it, myself. Thanks to ~Chase-Shift mentioning it, I kind of want to model this sucker in 3D, too. Would look good on my demo reel. Take a break from the ugly things and start work on some halfway decent looking aliens.I'm not too sure about the name I cooked up. Tarian is apparently 'shield' in welsh, as 'du' is black. So it very roughly translates into black shield. Which kind of works because I was planning on colouring it either matte black or matte white with highlights. Which then gives you the du Tarian: the black version, and the gwyn Tarian, the white ones. There'll probably be more colour schemes, as well, and some sort of heirarchy or caste system based on colour.
I've decided these species are fiercely loyal and make very good guards. Their tough exoskeleton keeps them from harm. They're kind of like the alien version of knights in armour. I still have a lot of thought to put towards biology and culture, but I'm looking forwards to it!

I like the design, though the foot pads need to support weight!
Also, lineweight! Lol.
Anyway, i really like the hands and the torso/head thing, not sure since it looks to be both in one. I see this in wild sticky colors, mucus and all that

Line weight! One of my major weaknesses. I never put much thought, if any, into line weight until someone points it out. 
Heh, I was actually planning on making it more clean, like a soft sort of grayish black on a dull slightly scarred carapace. No filth for these aliens. They's likes the cleanliness.

Lol, i guess the clean look would work well. I sort of see it as something that would be like the aliens from the movie, alien. They are smooth but still sort of live in a hive type thing, living in the walls or something haha.
Lineweight is a bitch to do, something that took me three years to understand to the point i know it...and even now i'm still sort of "okay" at it lol.

Not sure yet on the exact colour scheme, but I'm going to do a few varieties. I want them to be pastel colours instead of bright. Nice and soft on the eyes.

That would actually work really well, lighter colors. I would see things like yellows being a good color.
Sorry, he just looks really insect like to me, i can't get past the bug look lol. It's not bad, but i don't know if it's what you were going for.

Nah, they're supposed to be buggy. Most, if not all, of my alien designs are buggy. It's a common trait of mine.

He looks cool. I don't think his legs are too thin, they seem to add to it's strangeness. I like his weird looking head too.

Or maybe it's just not as heavy as it looks. Maybe it's concealing something, like its true face. Maybe its not even its head, but some sort of eleborate decoration...

It's those ridiculously skinny legs, isn't it? I've been debating over whether or not to change to foot design. Maybe bigger feet would help pull it together some more...

It reminds me quite a bit of the aliens from the original "War of the Worlds" Movie from the fifties!

I've never actually seen to original, only the remake, so I'll take that as a compliment! I also decided on a name for these aliens and a tiny little bit of insight into their culture.
