Hmmm, since you shared your 'brain pop', I'll share mine! You say it's new Mexico, so it's a very similar area; my brain pop is that it reminds me of a place near Phoenix, Arizona. I was only 7 or so at the time, so I don't remember the name, but my family and I went around on a tour of some of the mountainous regions around that area, plus a glimpse at some of the ancient villages that were carved into the mountains!
the particular structure I'm thinking of was above an area that was considered to be a good scenic viewpoint. If I'm thinking of the right place, there is a long and winding man-carved path going in zig-zags up the hillside; however, there are usually lots of people there, so sometimes there can be a few injuries. As a precaution, the staff maintaining the area put up many lines of rope in the harsher parts of the path, which was helpful in the cool December weeks we went there.
Sorry if this is just plain confusing, sometimes later hours tend to screw up my trail of thought even more than it already is...

It sounds like a beautiful place to visit. I must confess I've only ever visited Arizona on a couple of occasions, so my knowledge of its geography isn't the best.
