Calling people idiots simply because they ship two characters is pretty stupid. If these two stories had some better writing I'm sure the ships wouldn't that common, but since these characters (particularly Jeff) have backstories that I guess are supposed to make us sympathize with em, people wanna give em happy endings. That, and the fact that her name's Jane. Seriously, it doesn't make sense to give your character such a similar name if you want them to hate another character. Regardless the fact also remains that no individual or company owns these characters so there isn't really anyway to tell what's canon and what isn't.
  My advice to you guys is that if you wanna repair the fandom, rewrite their backstories. Fix the plot holes. Personally I'd make Jeff's story a total mystery. Picking up a little on my previous point, Jeff needs to lose his backstory. By making him a total enigma you make him less relatable and thus a better, scarier villain. It's much more frightening when the villain causes chaos for the simple sake of chaos like the Joker or Slender (from what I know anyway). Jane could very easily fall into the sort of anti-hero story line much like Kratos or Guts. She's after Jeff and will kill anyone who stands in her way. Well that's how I would restore the fan base anyway. How you go about doing it is all up to you.

It's not a mask in Jane's original story. The original by is where she's a genetically altered woman. Her eyes and turned black and her skin turned white. Someone else took the story and made it that she was burned by Jeff.
