This is exactly how I feel about my best friend Middie, although usually she'd the one who winds up saving me. Today she got a call from her Mom while she was making supper in the kitchen. Her Mom lives in another city, an airplane ride away. Her life has always been a mess, and she's never done much to change that. Middie's little half-brother lives with their mother. I don't know everything that woman said, but by the end of the call, Middie was sitting on the floor, tears pouring down her face, while she tried her best not to sob. All I could do was sit at her side, with my hand on her shoulder, and my head resting against her arm. It made me feel so small, knowing that I couldn't do anything more for the one person who means the most to me in the world, more than my own family even.
