Description So In her reference someone said that I should give Kahlilia a different color palette since the original colors didn't work well together (even gave a link to a suggested color palette so thanks for that)

There's also a slight change to her outfit. First I got rid of her semi-transparent sleeves. I liked them but since she's a fighter I thought they'd get in the way. In later drawings I'mma get rid of her shoes (that's why they're white) and the piece of cloth in the middle (the pointy one).

These are three designs that I really like and right now I'm favoring the third one  but want to know what you guys think. Which one is your favorite?

Hello, I am from ProjectComment 's Weekly Commenting Project .

Your image took my interest because of the original character design. I like how you combined the animal/reptile anatomy with human body language and expression.
Before I go to the outfits, note that I see this character for the first time and intentionally wrote this first part without reading her reference sheet.

My first impression Kahlilia with this design is tribal warrior, young girl, stubborn and active. In detail:

The cut:

      The top:
The shoulder free cut for me suggests an expressive and proud character. Additionally, I connect this detail to a younger woman or a warm climate.
For the sleeves, the combination of shoulder free and long sleeves for me suggest a contrasting character, as shoulder free indicates the wish to have freedom/air on her skin the sleeves are needed to cover up/protect herself (maybe in a practical manner (sun, insects, etc.) or a mental sense). This combination suggests a character with multiple layers or conflicting characteristics.

      The skirt:
Similar could be said for her skirt, whereas the very old cut (no buttons, zippers, etc.) suggest a  tribal origin/traditional lifestyle, especially with the round ornaments that don't seem to have a practical use and as such probably have a specific meaning. The very simple belt again suggests that she is not connected to any modern setting and needs to/wishes to rely on older, more traditional clothing. With this, I think the pointy middle cloth adds to the tribal origin style; without it, the skirt would look way more modern and become much shorter in the front.

      The shoes:
For her shoes, as she seems to be a reptile character which has no practical need for those, the shoes suggest that she is bound/limited. Additionally, shoes (especially with this modern cut) for me suggest that there is more civilization with many paved roads, clothing standards, etc., especially if there is no biological need for them. Omitting them for me would make the character look wilder and a bit more animal-like.

The coloring:

      The left one:
For me, the first outfit with the nude tone/skin tone suggests that the clothing is no essential part of her culture / is not needed to show status, wealth, personality, etc. but is a purely practical item, maybe made form leather. Here the animal/wild aspect seems to be the focus. The red accents mirroring her hair color nicely give enough contrast to still see the cloth on her skin.

      The middle one:
The lilac/blue coloring without many accents suggest a practical lifestyle, and maybe the need to not be seen/being active in the night. It would fit someone connected to soul reaping/dark magic/a secret organization etc. It looks rather modern (more like cotton, jeans, with a need for processing and dyeing) and would probably look incomplete without the shoes, creating a more civilized looking character that would fit nicely in a big city/modern/more technical setting. The flesh colored belt slightly subtracts from the look and does not fit in. Here I would have expected a cold silver or white belt that obviously also was fabricated industrial.

      The right one
For the third outfit, the mixture of colors again would need a setting where dyeing clothes bright colors are on the one hand possible, and the other hand no danger to its wearer. This outfit for me would fit right into a setting like Zootopia with a bit less technology. The bright pink suggest a young, careless girl, wanting to be seen and acknowledged. The lilac/blue accents that do not follow the seams of the outfit suggest a fashionable character and a world where these things matter. Especially the modern cut shoes add to the modern girl look. It almost screams immortal teenager with a big reserve of knowledge and skill but a sometimes childish behavior and wishes to fit in with modern society.

All in all, every outfit suggest a slightly different story setting and enhances different aspects of the character herself.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My personal opinion
Now that I read the backstory from the reference sheet, I believe both the second and third outfit fit her well.  The middle one suggest the rider of death aspect, and that as a mutant, she has to hide in the night or is part of a mysterious organization. Still, the right one fits her character (outgoing, wanting freedom, not being too serious) better.  The first one does not fit her at all, as it would suggest that she is proud of the tribe that sold her upon discovering her mutations.

It is just a suggestion, but why not give her both the middle and the right outfit. The bright one for her day to day life, where maybe under her new friend she has the freedom to express herself and the other one for her job as the rider of death. As she was pressured into that job and likes to behave like a teenager, from my view, it would fit that she tries to separate her new sparse freedom from the job she was forced into through clothing.

In general, I like if characters that do wear clothes have at least one if not more spare or situation dependant outfits. For me, this highlights the complex personality of the characters as you can express different things with the outfits and makes them more realistic.

First I'd like to say wow. Just wow. I've read your comment like 2-3 times and the detail you put into it is great. Your grammar was fine, a couple errors but nothing that it unreadable. Don't worry about it.

Thank you, thank you THANK YOU so much for your critique. It'll be a great help. I did plan for her to have a second outfit for her job as a Spirit Rider but wasn't sure of the colors but thanks to you I think I'll use the second one but with some tweaks. Everything you said I will definitely be considering.

You've made me super happy!

Hello, I'm from ProjectComment  !
First of all I want to say, I love everything about this character's design! She is absolutely beautiful, especially her tail, that's my favorite. By the way, I think that the outfit that suits her best is number 3, I agree with you. The red in it nicely matches her hair. And the purple on it nicely matches her tail, while the gold matches her eyes! Also, I think her hair being long looks great with the third outfit as well, while it doesn't go as well with the first or second. But I think you should keep her shoes. I think making them completely gold would look really good with the rest of her design. And again, gold matches her eyes perfectly. Also, I think her gloves should also be gold. But that's just my opinion, she would look fine without shoes too! I hope my advice helps, have a great day!
