demiveemon — Plush - chibi Pangolin growing more scales

Description Here's another update on how the chibi pangolin is coming along. Glueing on the scale is so speedy compared to sewing them on. Nonetheless I'm having the usual problem with getting the alignment right.

Restocked on eyes so now I have smaller ones too that I can try out at some point, since I think the current ones might be a tad too big.

You're welcome. I think the eyes are a very important element to consider when making plush toys. Not that I've made any, but I did see plushies with eyes that just didn't suit them.

demiveemon In reply to cinematic97 [2012-11-12 22:05:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the eyes are very important. I tried out a few different sizes of the same kind of eyes and that too has a major effect on the outcome. With the original large pangolin plush the eyes kept me worried up until the very end. The cartoony eyes of the Willy portrait in my ID-picture just didn't suit the plush, so I was overjoyed when I finally found these black eyes.

Yeah. So, I read you're currently stuck in an art-block. What kind of art do you usually do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cinematic97 In reply to demiveemon [2012-11-12 22:29:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes. Hmmmm mostly drawings. I used to be a big fan of vector art but then I suddently lost interest in it. Strange, isn't it? I've also tried some photography this year, but I'm still a beginner. I can't make plushies, though.

I used to draw all the time some years back. Then I ran into a major art block that lasted for a very long time and since then my relation to drawing has changed drastically. Nowadays I only draw rarely, but when I do I love to bring new Siesta art. In the time between I fiddle with various crafts. It's fun trying out different things like sewing or modelling with clay. I can recommend it. :3

Wow. You're lucky to have all those artistic skills so you can simply switch to making plushies or different crafts. As for clay, I don't know why but I never liked it. Not even when I was a kid. How about photography, have you ever had any interest in it?

demiveemon In reply to cinematic97 [2012-11-12 23:15:43 +0000 UTC]

I always regretted that I didn't get to play around as much with clay as I would have wanted when I was a child (or in art class at school). For many years I didn't try my hand on clay but thought about it every once in a while, that it probably would be awesome to work with (grass being greener and more lush on the other side of the fence and so on). Eventually clay got part of my plush making process (building a model that I can then use to create a working pattern) and then I decided to give it a try. It was harder than expected. %D But I think part of it being hard, was that I had gotten hold of air drying clay, so it was a constant race against the time and plashing drops of water on to the clay every now and then to keep it from drying. Poor Eddie (the turtle) ended up all slippery and went whack on to the floor. Felt like mashing him right there but luckily I didn't. xD

Hm, my sister and father are both interested in photography, but me myself I pretty much only make photos of my crafts.

I'm quite the opposite from you, I never liked clay. Not in kindergarten, not school, never. I even hated the smell of it. It was funny, because most of my schoolmates liked playing with clay. A clay model as a part of plush making process? Sounds like an interesting idea.

demiveemon In reply to cinematic97 [2012-11-12 23:38:44 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. I like clay as an alternative to drawing. When you draw, you're bound to 2D and making things appear like they are 3D. With clay I think it's fun to actually be able to see what something looks like in 3D and from different angles. I have problems with my skin on my hands though. It dries easily and gets itchy, so I can't work all too much with clay as it stresses the skin.
*does some digging* Here I have an old journal entry where I posted some pictures about my plush making process: [link]

So did you try out different drawing/ painting styles? I'm not all to familiar with vector art (more like not at all familiar).

cinematic97 In reply to demiveemon [2012-11-13 00:21:18 +0000 UTC]

Vector art is something special. It looks very simple but it isn't. You can check some examples on DeviantArt search sections. Other than that I liked to draw sketches and pictures on a paper, not a tablet or computer. Although I must admit I never had a tablet myself (but one of my friends have it).

Thanks and happy you my chibi pangolin. I have a larger more detailed version of Willy as well if you're interested.
On another note I'm trying to raise awareness of the real pangolins in the wild who are in great peril due to habitat loss and poaching. If you're interested in learning more and maybe help them by spreading the word, check this link: [link]

I do make them on demand an sell them for 170 USD. Then I donate 70 to help preserve real pangolins who are critically endangered from poachery and habitat loss. :3.

demiveemon In reply to randombrooke [2012-04-27 23:49:01 +0000 UTC]

On the chibi versions I'm using glue, but with the large version I attached all scales by sewing. Only took me a couple of month's work. %D

randombrooke In reply to demiveemon [2012-04-28 00:15:55 +0000 UTC]

a couple of MONTHS?!?!? u could sell that thing for like 1000 bucks!!

I would ask more for Willy, if I would be selling him. After all, I did work my ass off over 4 months and had to take a couple of weeks break, because the strain got too much for my hands to cope with. XD

randombrooke In reply to demiveemon [2012-04-28 04:43:29 +0000 UTC]

yeah i bet!!

oh and about the pattern...i guess i'll have to wait till next week to pay for it...stupid banks... my old bank reported me so i can't get a bank account, when the reason they have is because i didn't pay certain fees before my account shut down...i got robbed and someone stole my card and used it and overdrafted so i filed fraud claim so i wouldn't have to pay for that, but i guess they didnt get it in the mail so they shut the case down and are trying to force me to pay and now i cant even get a bank account until this is resolved. so i have my pay check but until i cant get a bank, i can't even get a debit card.

demiveemon In reply to randombrooke [2012-04-28 09:51:27 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like a lot of hazzle with your bank. I hope that you'll be able to resolve things quickly and hopefully be able to get some of the stolen money back. >.<

you sell? how much it costs?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

demiveemon In reply to Hatsune98 [2012-04-24 21:00:46 +0000 UTC]

A chibi pangolin costs $170 since it's a lot of work to make one. Part of the ammount is being donated to help save real pangolins from poachers.
