Description Thank you Deviant Survivor for giving me the push and the inspiration to paint something I wanted to do for ages.

Deviant Survivor Challenge Three: Life & Death. My team had death but I hope that's obvious. And I chose to attempt to paint one of the most memorable death scenes of classic literature. Ophelia's drowning. I hope I did it justice.

Some feedback here please. Too much detail or too little?

Used the lovely empatia-stock for reference.[link]

Oh this is beautiful. She looks so perfectly, emptily dead.

As far as the detail level, you might make it a bit more intricate around the face and maybe the flowers, just to add some emphasis and make them pop a bit more.
And I like that you made her a redhead! It's interesting. I feel like I usually see Ophelia painted as blonde.

Hehe. Thanks.

I did debate whether to make her a blonde or a redhead but I felt the red made her pop more. I've been considering where to add more detail. I always felt that I didn't get enough time to do the piece justice.

I LOVE IT. The way you did the ripples in the water is just perfect. The hand really does look like it's coming out of it. It looks like her face is cracking to pieces. It's a nice look.

Oooh I didn't think of it that way. That's such a cool visual. Sort of like shattering porcelain.

So amazing. Her being in the water looks really realistic, especially where part of her hand and arm are coming out of the water. And I could go on and on about every aspect. Awwww I hope you know that it's actually incredible.

You're incredible. Thank you my dear. I am very proud of it. It's still not perfect to me but then again they never are. Nevertheless I love it. Glad you do too.

It watercolours and a good chunk of my weekly patience. Oh and some pencil work. I'm glad you like it.

I bought watercolours not so long ago and can't get that watery-layer look... Though I really try not to take much paint and give as much water, as I can, not to ruin the paper... Gaww. Any tips? :<

DemoiselleDreamer In reply to Shirral [2010-08-29 09:56:12 +0000 UTC]

Well I find it really only works if you use like a high GSM paper. I use 300gsm and it barely buckles at all. And less buckling means you can use more water. I'm not sure if that helps I'm really kind of new to this.

Shirral In reply to DemoiselleDreamer [2010-08-30 14:17:08 +0000 UTC]

Wee! I found another good art shop in my town! And I got it! 250gsm, but it's supposed to work.

DemoiselleDreamer In reply to Shirral [2010-09-01 08:03:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah you'll find that even the thickest paper will buckle a little and you're really supposed to tape it down but I'm too lazy to do that and it doesn't seem to affect me that much. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

DemoiselleDreamer In reply to jakelaurence2000 [2010-08-28 01:28:18 +0000 UTC]

I can't believe I did it at all. Watercolours are a thing of patience and time limits don't make them easy. I think the competition is helping in that way though forcing me to do stuff to a time line.

DemoiselleDreamer In reply to jakelaurence2000 [2010-08-28 05:47:47 +0000 UTC]

Do you mean how long did it take? Didn't really keep a count but approximately two days to draw and paint.

oh my gosh Ash! this is really fantastic xD
you're really good at this. xD i have no idea as to what Ophelia's drowning is, but i think you gave it justice.

about the details, i think it's just right.

ehem, ehem, i'll be doing something nasty if this wont score a ten this round. xD good luck!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DemoiselleDreamer In reply to goyong [2010-08-27 04:18:22 +0000 UTC]

Lol. I probably should have explained that better. I forget not everyone is a shakespeare nut like me. Ophelia was the love interest in shakepeare's Hamlet and she met a very tragic end. The poor thing.

Everyone said the details are good so I think I'll just accept that the faults are from staring at it too long without food.

I know the feeling. Too much effort not to get some sort of recognition.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

goyong In reply to DemoiselleDreamer [2010-08-27 04:25:18 +0000 UTC]

lol i thought Ophelia was some sort of goddess or something.. im really bad at guessing.. haha but yeah thanks for explaining me about it..im really learning too much now

yeah the details are good, and the flowers for me below her (or floating on the water) gives me a sense that life is taking away from her and her death is parting her body and her soul.well that is my interpretation on that one

errr.. yeah, after last week, i just got the idea of what kind of style works for the judges, but i don't know, maybe they're swapping judges. haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DemoiselleDreamer In reply to goyong [2010-08-29 10:17:13 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately she was a very mortal fictional character who went a little crazy when her lover killed her father. Shakespeare does tragedy well.

That was the general idea so I'm glad you got that. But the flowers were also Shakespeare's. They're symbolic.

Yeah I have no idea how the points are really awarded. Is it more then one judge? Do they swap judges over? Is it a average score or an accumulation of different scores? Who knows.
