It is a Guardian of Forests (AKA GOF). They're friendly characters, and I guess you can say they're some sort of weak nature gods. They can't do much magic extending beyond healing small wounds and helping plant growth, but they'll protect the heart of their forests to the death. (They don't mind cutting and hunting that happens on the outskirts of their forests as that does not threaten the true part of the forest.) They also act as mediators between arguments between humans and other creatures, as they can understand both languages. (I.E. if a wolf pack was stealing all of a nearby village's sheep, the village would send a person to appeal to the GOF, and the GOF would speak to the wolves on the humans' behalf).
This particular GOF is named Myrrh. He's a bit too adventurous to be a good guardian, but the animals love him for playing with them.
