“…When we first encountered this creature, the first thing I noticed about was it’s similarity to the Reaper Leviathan, an antagonistic sea monster from the game called Subnautica back in the 2010’s. While they are far from Leviathan-class organisms, we still started calling them Reapers for simplicity’s sake…”

The Reapers (Machairocetoidea) are descendants of the Stabfin Flattacanth, that evolved a more active hunting style. Instead of hiding between the reefs, they hunt the open water for anything they can catch.
Being not the fastest, nor the biggest predators, they often hunt at night near coastal cliffs or in the case of the Blueback, hunt the twilight zone where few other big (fish) predators hunt.
Most Reapers are between 1 and 2 meters long, but the mesopelagic Blueback is an exception by growing up to 4 meters in length
