Description Finally, a photo of my (mostly) finished Jinx cosplay! This was taken at LAGC by Damitha Palliyaguruge , who was kind enough to send me the full size photos to edit. I've played with the colours a bit, tried to make the tattoos look less rubbed off and made the coil in the gun blue (unfortunately the wire broke when I got to the convention).

You can see the original photo here: www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi…

Wow thanks! Not everyone agrees on that haha.

The answer is no and no... just eating a calorie deficit made up of mostly pub meals and take aways.

At least if it was abs it wouldn't all splurge out when I sat down!

I don't really want visible abs anyway, I just want a flat stomach, even if it's only flat when I'm standing up.

Well, that could be achieved if you wanted it badly enough. Though it would take a fair amount of exercise...

I'm willing to do the exercise if necessary, but right now just seeing if I can get it through diet alone. I need to convince myself that I NEED to do the exercise to get it, otherwise I know I'll just give up.

Why can' you link anything?

You would have some rather exceptional genetics were that to be the case. Not saying it can't happen, but hmmm...

As for why I can't link anything, that's just kinda how DA seems to be. I've had a good bit of trouble trying to link stuff to people through comments/notes.

108lbs is the lowest healthy weight for my height, and I'm 113, so not far off. I'm happy with my body at the moment really so I'm in no rush, I'd just like to change a few things. If I wasn't already reasonably happy I wouldn't have cosplayed Jinx! lol.

The links seem to work! The first one is really interesting, I've glanced through it, I'll have to give it a good read later. I rather like its TDEE calculator, it's one of about 2 others that give me 1700 to maintain, most give me 1500-1600.

Murmansk In reply to DemoraFairy [2014-02-17 22:55:13 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeeeeah. Apparently you need to eat a lot if you want to try and gain weight...

I mean, it gets hard to eat that much when you aren't consuming lots of refined carbs and sugar ><

Being happy with your figure is mucho fantastic. And yes, I would guess cosplaying Jinx indicates at least some comfort, but hey, nothing wrong with trying to achieve new heights of personal health and strength!

Personally, I think it's fun!

DemoraFairy In reply to Murmansk [2014-02-18 09:03:06 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I think I must have put my details in wrong before, it's now giving my 1500 to maintain at sedentary (and 1000 a day to lose! lol). Oh well. 2,200 if I want to start gaining. I think I'll have no problem reaching that haha, I don't feel hungry most of the day but I could definitely have no problem eating more. But I guess we'll see when I get there. As you say, might be difficult without tonnes of unhealthy food.

I agree it's fun! I did spend most of my time eating microwave meals and such, but I am trying to be more healthy and I'm rather enjoying it! I still wouldn't say I'm eating clean - I'm still eating pub food twice a week, take out once a week and packaged foods for lunch everyday, but the meals I do make myself I'm making from scratch rather than buying a microwave meal like I did before. I don't feel any different physically like a lot of people who say eating clean makes them feel more energetic or whatever, but I guess I haven't really made that much of a change. Small steps and all that. I'm kinda looking forward to doing more exercise, but when I did it before I really hated it. I'm hoping that if I do it with more calories a day it'll give me more energy and I'll enjoy it a bit more, plus if I only do it 3 times a week instead of 5 like I was before it might not seem so overwhelming.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Murmansk In reply to DemoraFairy [2014-02-18 19:07:54 +0000 UTC]

I think it all depends on how you gauge your activity level. For me, mine isn't as high as I'd like at the moment so that's a fun little nuance to include.

But somehow, I think that eating only 1000 might be a touch too little. And yes, 2000+ is a lot when you cut out refined carbs, especially sugar w @

How tall are you? If you don't mind me asking.

So long as what you're doing gets you results you like and you enjoy your body, that's a great thing.

However, if what you are doing has improved your body and overall health and made you feel more content with what you are, then that's simply wonderful.

Doing any more is simply trying to take your life in a direction that probably seemed like a fantasy not too long ago. This is something for which I give a great deal of respect and I wish you the best in those pursuits.

As for doing the gym 3 times a week - I'd advise it. 5 Times is a bit much unless you've really been keen on your fitness for awhile and have a very specific workout routine for different parts of the body for each day.

(Some people go twice a day 7 days a week, but they're usually the pros who seek to make a living off of the capabilities of their body. I felt like including them to cover all of my bases.)

DemoraFairy In reply to Murmansk [2014-02-18 23:02:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's a nice side effect of not doing any exercise, no worrying about getting the wrong activity level! How much exercise do you tend to do? And 1000 is definitely too low I agree, I wouldn't go below 1200.

I'm 5'4.

Funny thing is I never worried about my body or looks before when I was overweight, in some ways I was almost more confident than I am now! I never got any fat comments or anything like that before, it was only after I lost about 30lbs I started getting comments about being too fat for my cosplays. Very strange how things like that happen. It was only when I started dieting did I really start thinking about how I looked and striving to look better, and so far I'm really enjoying it.

Yeah, in hindsight 5 days a week is probably a bit much. I just mostly wanted to get my money's worth lol. When I first signed up my mum said she'd pay my membership, then after it was all paid for she realised it was £60 a month not £60 a year, and decided she wasn't going to pay it after all, so I was desperate to make the most of this service I was spending so much of my money on. And then ironically using it too much put me off it completely.

Murmansk In reply to DemoraFairy [2014-02-18 23:55:17 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's pretty crazy o_o

I attend the largest gym of a popular chain in the US and it only costs me 10 USD per month.

But yeah, using it too much will just strain the body of an untrained individual.

As for me, I do it a couple of times a week. I just got back into legs and did too many lunges. Now it hurts to walk and stand up/sit down ;w;

I'm thinking weight lifting 3 times a week with yoga 2-3 times a week would be a good regimen, just gotta put it into practice and maintain it for a looong while.

5'4 is a great height, I think. I'm a little on the lower end of the scale because I'm 5'10 and I weigh 132-138 on average.

As for your weight and people never mentioning it, I have a theory, and nothing more - just a theory.

Perhaps people saw your greatest weight and didn't bother commenting about it to you because they thought there was no point in it - like you would never change regardless of what was said so nothing was said at all.

I often feel that the feedback mechanism of other people showing concern for us is one of the greatest motivators that will cause someone to persevere against challenging odds.  And the fact that you're enjoying these pursuits is simply wonderful.

I used to be 200 pounds when I was 12 years old so I know what it's like to lose a bunch of weight. It actually feels really good, I think!

DemoraFairy In reply to Murmansk [2014-02-20 18:50:37 +0000 UTC]

Bloody hell, $10 a month?! I've never heard of a gym over here that cheap! Even my uni gym at £150 a year, which is crazily cheap, is twice that amount. My gym is £60 (about $100) a month. To be fair it is the chain's flagship location, and it gets me membership at every gym of that chain in the country. Unfortunately there aren't any of that gym chain near uni!

Oh no I always seem to ache after going to the gym. I think I need to warm up & cool down more.

I tried doing yoga once... never again lol. I'm not good with classes, I have to do my own exercises at my own pace.

Wow you're tall! So yeah you're right near the bottom of healthy, pretty much where I aim to be

There might be some of that... I think it's more likely that my old cosplays were only ever seen by people on DeviantART, and people here tend to be quite nice. I started posting them on Facebook where people are a lot more... critical, to put it nicely. Plus the League of Legends community can be about as toxic as the Ku Klux Klan.

And I agree that comments like that can make good motivators. I mean I'd rather not get the comments, but they do help, in a way. And congratulations on all the weight loss! That's amazing!

Murmansk In reply to DemoraFairy [2014-02-20 22:03:11 +0000 UTC]

But my membership also gets me access to every gym in the chain. They're just aiming to undercut their competition by offering crazy low prices.

This chain gets a lot of flak for it as well. People call the brand out for being too casual or soft. Not being worth the value... even though they have instructors and an impressive amount of equipment. Do they have everything? Nope. Could there be more things added for people with a more intense physique? Yes. How many people, realistically, need such a thing? Very few. I think they have a wonderful system, and unless I wanted to do competitive body building (Which I don't) then I would definitely keep their plan for everything it offers. You can upgrade to a premium membership for 20 dollars a month which lets you access massage machines, tanning beds, and get half off the price of drinks from their coolers.

You ache after going to the gym? In what way? Is it just muscle soreness or do you lose flexibility and range of motion in your joints? (Though I always recommend warming up and cooling down to prevent injury.)

As for my yoga experience, I actually do it through DVDs. I just follow the instructions and try to keep up and enjoy myself. I get to do it at home so it's pretty convenient, ja?

I wouldn't say I'm tall. It seems like most of the guys I know are my height or taller. x_x

For my weight - I got them skinny-fat feels going on.

Also keep in mind that as time goes by - more and more people will get into cosplay because it's a fun and open hobby. As more people get into it, the skill bar rises. What seemed good 7 years ago is probably quite mediocre by today's standards. When fields innovate ya gotta either keep up or accept being at the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality.

The way I see it is like this - Having lots of extra weight is a problem, but the addition of lots of body fat is usually a symptom of something else. I listened to an interview with a therapist who worked with many overweight folks and he described how many of them had suffered prior trauma that led to all sorts of issues/dysfunctions which manifested in the form of obesity.

Essentially - the people who were obese tended to realize they were that way but had something going on in their brain that made it of little importance to them. It is that which causes the indifference to bodily well being that is truly deserving of attention - not just eating habits and calories.

Once again, this is just a general statement and doesn't apply to everyone, but the number of cases he reported where it was the truth is quite staggering indeed. The reason I think that feedback and comments about weight can be important is that they can remind us about how our choices are affecting our health - HOWEVER, and this is the really important part. The comments must not be condescending, they need to be empathetic and show massive amounts of concern for the feeling of the person who is putting on excess weight - and they must be from someone with whom the person gaining weight feels a deep bond - be it from trust, affection, or otherwise.

Does all or any of that make sense or sound reasonable to you?

DemoraFairy In reply to Murmansk [2014-02-21 08:55:41 +0000 UTC]

Maybe gyms are just cheaper in the US than the UK haha. Sounds like the sort of gym I'd be interested in.

Yeah, losing flexibility. Really stiff, like I want to spend the whole day stretching. I'm sure it's just because I never warmed up or cooled down properly, which is something I need to make sure to do in the future.

Maybe following DVDs would work better, I mostly hated how instructors would never let you have a rest, which meant that I ended up hating it an never going. I'll try getting some DVDs!

You sound tall to me Everyone sounds tall to me lol. And I know exactly what you mean about feeling skinny fat. I will work on it... eventually.

Yeah I know what you mean! When there are people with perfect looks making perfect cosplays, it's hard to compete. Gotta keep striving to be better.

I think that all makes sense. I can't say any of the comments I've had have been particularly caring though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Murmansk In reply to DemoraFairy [2014-02-21 11:38:50 +0000 UTC]

It's really too bad a similar service isn't offered in the UK, I wonder why that is.

As for your flexibility and stiffness, did it happen after every workout or only towards the beginning of your routine? Or had you previously not kept up an exercise regimen past 2 weeks?

Wow, the DVDs I followed said that Yoga should be done at a conversations pace. Which means that all throughout the routine you should be feeling relaxed enough to have a casual conversation with someone and in no way be short of breath. The instructor also stressed that if you felt tired or overworked you should just relax for a bit in a resting pose until you think you could continue the routine.

Oh come now, you're not -that- short. I know plenty of people around 5'0 or somewhat shorter.

And yes, skinny fat will be defeated, someday.

Usually their looks aren't perfect, they just have skilled photographers with great lighting techniques all the while knowing how to use makeup. Not saying there aren't highly attractive individuals on the scene making big moves - I'm just saying they're not "perfect."

Yikes, yeah, unkind or caring remarks about ones figure certainly don't make things better. I meant it more so in the case of a friend giving concerned feedback  - for example.

Say you put on 10 or 15 pounds and it was noticeable. This would cause your friend to give you a serious chat where the person asks something like, "Hey, I notice you've gained some weight recently. Is something troubling you? Have you noticed this as well? Why do you think this is happening?"

Though while I'm sure this kind of treatment is quite rare, I think it could contribute positively towards someones life by being shown love and empathy from someone you feel is valuable.

DemoraFairy In reply to Murmansk [2014-02-25 22:15:00 +0000 UTC]

Maybe there is one and I just don't know about it!

I think it was pretty much every time, I can't really remember all that well. I worked out pretty consistently back when I did go the gym.

With Yoga it wasn't necessarily going to fast, it was just really difficult. Things like Bodypump and Pilates were ones I couldn't keep up with.

I know I'm not *that* short haha, I'm actually bang on average height, but you wouldn't think it looking at the people I know! Out of everyone I know (that isn't a child), the only people that are shorter than me are my mum and my gran.

True, something you've gotta remember when seeing any photo of someone, really. But I have seen some truly amazing ones at conventions.

Yeah, that's a lot nicer than the comments I had haha. I think it is something that should be done more often, but weight is almost something not seen as a health issue, in a way. People are far more likely to say that being fat is who they are and the lifestyle they choose, when they probably wouldn't say that about something like alcoholism or drug adiction. And the same with fat acceptance and things like that, you don't generally get alcoholism acceptance.

Hmmm, you might have been overworking your muscles and not giving them enough rest time then. Rest is super important, I had a friend who made his back ache for a month from not resting. Bad move on his part.

I can't manage a proper downwards dog yet, so I know how challenging Yoga can feel. > :

Ahahaha, a lot of my male friends are taller than me so I know how that feels. Plenty go above 6 feet tall even >w>

I guess that's true, seeing them in real life would kind of take your back a little I'm sure. Some people just have that natural beauty going for them.

Food can have addictive tendencies in their own right. Sweets like soft drinks and cake and candy? That stuff tastes really, really good. It also triggers the reward centers in the brain much in the same way certain addictive drugs do.

Maybe. I always made sure to leave at least a day between strength training, but I'll try leaving a bit more time in the future if I'm still getting the same problem.

Bloody men, being so tall!

I've seen a lot of discussion about this on MyFitnessPal, people saying the only way they can lose weight is to cut out sugary things entirely because they can't stop at just a bit. Always spawns a rather heated debate as to whether you can be addicted to sugar or not. I think it's a great shame for those people, I'd hate to cut out sugar entirely.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Murmansk In reply to DemoraFairy [2014-03-05 20:04:18 +0000 UTC]

Mhmmm, I've been told it's best to leave at least 2 days for full muscle recovery. It's why people like to cycle different muscle groups on different days!

Hah! It's in the genetics for men to be taller. Needed to move heavy stuff and the ladies tended to prefer it.

I don't think there's much to discuss. People can be addicted to sugar because when you consume sugary foods you get a flood of endorphins similar to what you get when you have sex or use cocaine.

So basically, you get a surge of pleasure and "feel good" chemicals from the brain. Why can people become addicted to sugar? One would really have to understand how addiction works in the first place.
From what I've listened to and read that most convinces me - people develop a vulnerability to addiction when they're in severe trauma during their early stages of life. This affects how the brain develops in various ways and leads to a chronic feeling of being what most would consider to be unhappy. These people then get ahold of a drug, sugary/fatty food or something else that triggers the reward centers of the brain and get that rush of happiness.

Whereas a normal person might feel between 90-100 on a scale of happiness, a person with this traumatic damage that morphs the structure of the brain will only feel at like a 30-40. They use whatever triggers the rush of endorphins and BAM! They spike up to a 75-80 and feel amaaaaazing. Then crash down even lower than they were before.  This is a very rudimentary explanation and if anything I said seems fishy or inaccurate then I encourage you to seek out science on the biological basis of addiction. But I think all of this sounds quite reasonable. I'm sure someone with a greater knowledge of this issue could give an explanation that's 100 times better though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DemoraFairy In reply to Murmansk [2014-03-11 08:05:20 +0000 UTC]

I'll try that next time then!

Most of the discussion was is 'addicted' the right word? Can you be addicted to sugar like you can can be addicted to drugs or alcohol? Would the people who claim to be addicted to sugar mug someone or steal from their family to get enough money for their next fix? Would they get withdrawal symptoms if they stopped eating sugar? Of course most of that generally wouldn't come up because sugar is easy to get hold of and doesn't ruin you as much as drugs or alcohol, but it still seems hard to imagine someone stealing money for a Mars bar. Another point that caused a lot of discussions was that those that claimed to be addicted to sugar would say that they have to cut sugar out completely - they're fine as long as they don't eat any, but as soon as they have something they can't stop. This of course isn't the case with other addictions, if a drug addict stops using he gets withdrawal symptoms. Another point was that they often said they were fine with fruit, even though fruit has sugar in it too, so should theoretically have the same affect as chocolate.

I don't really come down on one side or the other. I completely get what you're saying about endorphins and such, but it does seem a bit extreme to compare sugar addiction to addictions like drugs and alcohol. But I can definitely sympathise with not wanting to stop after just one chocolate bar!

Murmansk In reply to DemoraFairy [2014-03-31 13:17:25 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you can be addicted to sugar like you can to drugs. (alcohol is a drug - to be clear.)

You can also be addicted to sex, video games, sports, the internet, tv, junk food, self harm, picking at your skin, and etc.

Are all of those things usually as intense as the addiction to drugs? As far as my knowledge goes - no. But they do have a similar origin. Past abuses which manifest themselves as dysfunction.
People who get addicted to drugs are usually those who suffer the worst kinds of treatment and upbringing.

The reason people steal money to buy drugs is because it gives them dopamine and endorphins. They have a serious medical illness for which they are self medicating and cannot stand the agony of their existence without the use of their self-selected medication. Of course the prices are driven up by insane margins due to drugs being illegal. (I've been told the markup for heroin from farmer to consumer is 16000%)

Also note that if you have a 300 pound a month drug habit you have to steal roughly 3000 pounds worth of goods to pay for it. Stolen items have roughly a 90% mark down price due to its illegitimate and highly risky nature.

Fruit is a different case because chocolate, cakes, sweets in general that are baked or have lots of added sugar lack the component of fiber. Fiber slows the release of sugar and insulin into the blood stream by a large margin - and many fruits contain far less sugar than human-baked treats.

Do note that chocolate has also been linked to increased levels of serotonin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotoni…

So, Tabitha, think of it like this. A cold is an illness - Cancer is an illness. We would describe people with either of these conditions as being sick.
However - any reasonably educated and empathetic individual would understand that cancer is far, faaar more grim and severe than a mere cold.
Are they both still a form of sickness? Yes. It's just that one is of a much greater concern.

Does that help you understand the comparison of addictions between drugs and sugar?
