The waistcoat, shirt, hat and black part of the skirt I got from various gothicy shops. The boots and the base of the belt and a few of the things dangling off it I got from charity shops. Some of the other stuff hanging off it I got from eBay. The pouches and pockets on the belt, as well as the necklace and red part of the skirt, I made myself.

That is incredible: your outfit looks a lot like what I thought up as my first Stampunk Cosplay last night. It is really nice!

Sounds very good ^_^ One of our crew had wings that were MEANT to have clockworks but she instead opted for glowing wires in the end LOL

Actually, I would consider that steampunk. There's plenty of different influences in steampunk besides Victorian Britain, everything from the Old West to even mystical influences.
It's a nice base to build upon. I would think of who you're portraying (airship pirate, aristocrat, explorer, etc), then add appropriate accessories.
Another suggestion would be to go to Brass Goggles, a steampunk forum and blog, and SteamFashion on Livejournal, to see about advice for your outfit.

Yeah, the Victorians tended to be more austere. I see Spanish, or perhaps a very clean gypsy. It's the frills on the cuffs and collar, the boots, and the black lace (all of which I quite like) that aren't really evocative of the Victorian sensibilities. But at the same time, Victorian sensibilities almost can't produce a sexy costume.

Yeah, it's really not all that Victorian - but after looking at some other steampunk cosplays, there seemed to be a lot of different interpretations. I have to agree with gypsy, I did think that myself at one point. I originally wanted it to have a much more sepia colour scheme, mainly just browns and whites, but it was hard to find clothes of those colours. I think I might try to make another outfit at some point when I've got more experience with the genre that's more Victorian.

I'm not really very familiar with steampunk norms, but I am interested in it. But my impression is that this kind of costume is more common than a more "authentic" Victorian look. One good resource you might look into is Civil War re-enacting sutlers, who often carry good for women, which you could incorporate or modify. The other thing I might suggest is modified thrift store items.

Yeah, a lot of steampunk costumes have other styles as well as Victorian. I wanted to try to keep mine Victorian, but it was harder than I thought. I'll have a lookinto it, thanks for the suggestion. Heh, I work in a charity shop, and most things I use in my cosplays come from either charity shops or eBay lol
