Description Used images.on-this.website/21379_1… as a reference. This is a lioness head study I did. I'm getting the hang of painting! This was so much fun. I think I need to do a lot of drawing/anatomy studies, my painting skills are getting better but getting the head to look alright was such a struggle, and i don't think I succeeded. It looks oaky, but not great. So I need to work on my drawing skills. I had fun with the colors though! I still suck at fur, but I'm getting there! Experimented with a blurry background for fun. I'm getting better but i still have so much to learn!
Critique/redlines welcome!

Time for another Critique e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> Id like to state beforehand the critique takes into account the reference image you supplied with the deviation. When looking between the two.. its not bad, however I have some tips on how to tweak the image to make it more similar. When looking at the lion on the ref, imagine drawing a line between the eyes and the ears, you will see they are both the same. In the case of the ref we see the lions ears and eyes are both lower on the left hand side as the perspective follows that. However when looking at yours, you made them more ore less on the same level. This would be perfectly fine... however you did do this on his forehead... In referring to the top line (in between the ears) does a good job of following that, which makes the rest of the image look off. Basically I would recommend sketching them side by side, and being very meticulous on little details before beginning to render. Although without the ref the image (solely) looks pretty damn good e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/> Moving on to your painting technique... its clear you meant to exaggerate the colors. lighting/shadows which is great! Just make sure it doesn't inter-fear with the anatomy. This is mainly a problem on the lions nose bridge thing (you can tell im SOOO good at this). The highlighting from the light source is good, but on aspects it starts to change the anatomy due to the strong contrast.. which inst always a good thing. When looking at the rest of the shading/highlighting.. it looks good to me. just realize that with such strong lighting you may want to darken/strengthen some of the shadows to counter-balance a little more. This can be applied to under the face (neck) and on the left side where the light doesn't hit. Overall the composition is really good and the vision is clear. Keep it up e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Honestly, this is so amazing. I really love all the soft, warm colours that you put in here, as well the light touch of colder tints for the shades. It's amazing and the minimalistic background makes you focus onto the headshot only. <3

As others have said, the perspective on the head is a bit wonky.  But the way you painted this is gorgeous, just the right blend of stylized and realistic.  Especially those eyes, they're amazing.

Perspective, my arch nemesis! lol I definitely see it. XD I'm trying to do some perspective studies to try and improve on that. Just can't seem to get it right!
And thank you! I was really trying to experiment with stylizing realism. It was so much fun and a great learning experience. The eyes are the most stylized. Couldn't help myself had to give them some extra pop. XD

Those eyes, tho.  I almost didn't notice the perspective because the eyes were freakin' gorgeous.  On the other hand, I only noticed because I kept looking at them.  Does that make them a blessing and a curse?

My beautiful eyes shall distract you from the perspective! lol That's pretty interesting actually. Perhaps they are both a blessing and a curse. XD

I really like how the actual drawing is realistic but the coloring is so stylistic and it works well. I love the colors a lot

Thanks so much! I've been working on pushing colors while still maintaining a certain level of 'realism'. Thanks for your feedback!

I think you did a good job on this, the eyes are really well done! I do like that you've added the reflection, makes them feel more realistic which is nice. And the blurry background coupled with the lighting and shading works wonders for making this feel more three-dimensional which I really like. I do like the brush strokes in the background that gives the impression of savannah grass, nice touch. Also I don't think you did a bad job on the fur at all, just enough texture there to suggest the fur which often is all you need. It's certainly better than the fur I can do! The head, it looks good enough to me but I think the problem is that I think the nose and jaw are pointing in a slightly different direction in 3D space to the rest of the head (like the jaw and nose are pointing more towards the viewer than the rest of the head if you get what I mean) which is causing it to look slightly off (as you mention), but with a bit more practice that shouldn't be too difficult to correct. But that's pretty much my only problem with it. The colours are lovely and warm, very appropriate for an African plain. Overall, excellent work! Hope you didn't mind the little critique in the middle

Of course I don't mind the critique! Might have just solved the riddle of why this looks wrong to me. XD I'll work on it! Thanks so much for your insightful feedback! I really appreciate it!
