I alwas thinking obstinately that realisem painting is not about about realistc objectively. It just borrow a shell to express artist's motion  and philosophy or inspire audiences' own minds .for all this ,you done you job perfectly.I stare this painting so long that lost in the personality of this painting have .(SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH ,I wish I express myself clearly)   this painting have some unique qualities

Thank you Bing.  I agree with your assessment of realism painting as a shell to express emotions and philosophy while inspiring the minds of an audience.  It is equally inspiring to hear that this is understood, because sometimes it can be very difficult to maintain a balance that supports the visual statement as an artful composition.  Thank you for taking the time to express your artistic perspective.

damn, what can i say or add that hasn't been said, ill keep it simple and say, your Art is breathing, it's listening and it's speaking

thank you for sharing the art and the message with us

these are always fairly tricky, finding the right balance between content and aesthetics, while maintaining a series that continues to explore new horizons.

Always my pleasure .. and thanks for your generous support

I love what you say with your brushes, your brushes speaking. The message is always human and strong, you are more than a talented painter

I love that you took on a person that most of us shiftily try to avoid looking at too hard, and you looked at him good and long. The texture of the water bottle, newspapers, and sock are great. The van and the metal door still look a little flat. But this is a great piece!!

Denis-Peterson In reply to TwistedAlyx [2014-07-08 16:29:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! .. And yeah the metal on the van became problematic when I attempted to remove some uncooperative varnish and nearly completely wiped the entire background down to the under painting (futile attempt to get the piece ready for a show in SF, where it is hanging now.)

TwistedAlyx In reply to Denis-Peterson [2014-07-08 16:44:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it happens. Behind each art piece there's this huge unknown drama, right? Like I said, it looks great regardless.

Fantastic work. You can really see and feel the person. Hard to explain. They are not just subjects. They are real.

Never thought I would do a second study on him but managed to connect with his message again in an attempt to portray it a bit differently this time thanks.

Wow, all those wonderful textures & effects!

Is there a technique you use for getting letter & print looking so... right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Denis-Peterson In reply to Lamp0 [2014-06-09 16:15:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks and yes this was all about a wide range of textures and surfaces. The trick is to maintain a limited palette of shared colors and tones throughout. As to printed letters etc I use clay pencils and acrylic inks in layers then airbrush translucent acrylic paints with resins over them to tie it together.

Lamp0 In reply to Denis-Peterson [2014-06-14 02:37:13 +0000 UTC]

Interesting! What's a "clay pencil"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Denis-Peterson In reply to Lamp0 [2014-06-14 23:22:58 +0000 UTC]

Faber Castell in Germany prob still makes them .. They have partial clay content. Smoother tonal transitions than most

Thanks Gabor, haven't been posting much lately, but its always fun putting one up.
I love figurative work, always have.  Right now I am working on a very unusual figurative series, seems to allow for more connections from within as opposed to concentrating on just unifying a spatial composition based on buildings, etc.  Whatever works for you best and most naturally ..

Amazing as usual Denis. You find inspiration and a story. Most of us would wish that they were invisible. Easier to ignore than to embrace. You have a beautiful way of shaking up our world. Hear the applause.

Hey Tom thanks very much .. in fact, I spent the morning with him on the street, learning his story, trying to help him make contacts with folks I knew, and even holding out his cup when certain of the the passersby all but ignored his existence .. I left gratefully uplifted by his humility, his grace and his open willingness to share his life with me.. thanks again!

its great... I thought it looked like a different agnle from the shoot - what made you decide to revisit these images?

Denis-Peterson In reply to dizzykid [2014-04-26 12:19:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Dizz, show theme called for something along these lines. Looking through my camera photos and this one popped out screaming to be painted. Also interesting  how one of the papers spread on the sidewalk said art exhibition.

dizzykid In reply to Denis-Peterson [2014-04-27 00:51:35 +0000 UTC]

ahh .. .I was also trying to read the paper - he seems very content with an almost grateful expression on his face despite his obvious setback - the cross around his neck and the folded hands perhaps hints towards his good faith - after being able to read more about the Dust to Dust painting with its religious implications (and now stare at it for longer periods of time) I notice 3 very distinct triangular implied shapes (trinity) in the composition - don't know if this is deliberate or just a good coincidence ... or perhaps I just look too far into it!

Denis-Peterson In reply to dizzykid [2014-04-27 21:05:59 +0000 UTC]

yeah its the headline of the flat paper above the yellow as it hits the sidewalk crack ,, he was likely one of the most grateful people I have met, most in his circumstances would be really resentful.  in fact, his dad was a minister, and he was acutely aware of his spiritual path and how it led him to see the consequences of his wrongful actions.  quite a few lessons learned here indeed .. as to the DTD piece, yeah it was realized during the painting but not initiated with any conscious intent .. glad to hear its up and running, looks good in frame ..

dizzykid In reply to Denis-Peterson [2014-04-28 00:51:52 +0000 UTC]

very interesting - and yes, its looks great in the frame - have it hanging in my parents newly finished basement with my larger Bellows Prints - made the stretchers a tad smaller to have a bit of leeway and was glad to get it that square on the first stretch - had a friend make the frame that screwed right into the back of the stretcher - minus the cost of the varnish and stain it cost about $8 total
