Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

It is tempting to use lots of superlatives for the immediate impact of this shot - far more superlatives than there are elements in the shot in fact. The simplicity of the composition is a powerful counterpoint to the complexity of what went on at this beach in World War 2 - so many men must have died here, the beach would have been full of vehicles and men, the air alive with noise and the sounds of war. I wonder how many lost lives each of these flags represent - perhaps no-one knows accurately and completely... There is something special about the movement in these flags - in the photograph the poles and the flags almost seem to stand out in 3-D (a testament to your use of light and super-skillful post processing work), and the movement of the flags ripping in the breeze only emphasises the silence and stillness now now compared to the vision of hell this beach witnessed some 65 years ago. So - full marks for impact! I think that the square format and the partial vignetting works well to emphasize the subject matter, and the placing of the flags and the foreground in the frame is absolutely right. This critique is not critical - I cannot find anything here that could be better - the perfect marriage of technique, subject matter and story.

i agree completely...in fact just one left side it is a monument on beach but when i see how big the beach is and walk around from this part 500 m left and right i see that the real monument is beach itself and that send...there will be a few more from this place, hope you will like them...

Denis - as you say, impossible. But it is the contrast between 'then' and 'now', and the starkness of the flags against that empty beach, which speak volumes I think. The flags are national symbols of course, and they are in this empty place for a reason. I guess sometimes it's possible to show something by an absence, rather than a presence. I think your photo enables the viewer to fill in what is not there - this silence is one of respect too, respect for what is not there...

Nigel...Thank you very much...i must say that being on this place give some strange feel...almost nothing there ,just sand and water and all those images from war that comes rapidly to my head...it is really hard to "transfer" this emotion to the picture and i really didn't try to do that...it is impossible...

This is an appropriately sombre-looking piece of work with a dense, dark atmosphere. Good stuff, without doubt.

oriontrail In reply to denis2 [2009-07-14 10:23:36 +0000 UTC]

Uz to nekad koristim Efex Pro.

Hvala na odgovoru!
