He directed Fantastic Mr. Fox, Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom, and a couple other films. He's actually quite good at what he does.

It was a new approach at stop motion animation, and you aren't the only one who was taken back by it. 
It's just his style.

I recommend them. Granted I haven't seen all of them, but I've seen enough to become a fan of his work, but you know, to each his own.
