This is so familiar. Thanks for capturing it. I wanted to buy one of those long-backed phones as a souvenir. Yes - you don't want to stand out in that crowd.

Why not shoot with a point'n'shoot then? I believe these are soundless. Or get a Leica :-P

What, you're gonna see the difference when scalled down for the web?
No quality issue with Leica for sure, if that's your concern.

scaled down...
serisously, do you think i'm making photos only for deviantart? or just for the web???
second: i don't happen to have a leica.
third: for me, quality also includes sensitivity to light, RAW photos (for dark situations) and a narrow field of depht. and much much more factors that only an SLR can master.

I don't know what else are you planning to do with this type of street shots. I'm just commenting on what I see, which is a 750pix wide web picture.
You've written that it was scary to take this photo with a big camera, I've suggested some ways to avoid or minimise that in your future shooting.
MFT cameras, Voigtlander Bessas and tons of other small, quiet and unobstrusive gear that's perfect for street. MFT's image quality is comperable with APS-C size sensors; film cameras, when you know what you're doing, easily win with any DSLR's image quality.
Cheers.

I see. you were giving me advice for future pics like these. thanks for that!
but it's not like i mainly shoot these kind of pictures. all in all, i do not 'plan' to go look for some great scene in the subway anyway. it just happens, and i take a picture with the cam i got.
and as said, it's not just the "sensor" or "film" quality (i don't do analogue) that i value in my dslr, but also partly the big bulky obstrusive lenses i can attach to it, which give me the effects i want.
perhaps i will try out some of the mentioned cameras or other ones, but now i just don't have the money.

dangerous? no, why should it be? but it's true that it's something rude to do there. just the same here in Europe or America, though.

yes yes it does take a lot of guts to take photos on the train. and it hurts a bit inside that the man in the middle is rocking the double cell (texting himself no doubt) anyways, great photo!

Why does it take lots of guts? I always thought the Japanese would be more tolerant of such things than say, New Yorkers, even if its out of politeness and nothing more.

I am a respectful person and therefore feel some kind of shame when pulling things like that off. they wouldn't shout at me, no, but that's not the point. It just doesn't feel right, abusing their politeness.

Ah, I see. That's understandable. I would probably chicken out myself. With New Yorkers its like... "well, I might get yelled at for nothing at all so why not." har har
