Description This was something I had in mind since starting DeviantArt. Around summertime of this year, I read all of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (surprised it took me so long as I read some of Dahl’s other books as a kid), and I enjoyed every page of it. The charming yet somewhat dark storytelling really engages you, and it’s a world you’d love to explore.

Of course, I checked out both the 1971 and 2005 film adaptations afterwards. I enjoyed both a ton, but I’d have to say that the one I prefer (by a landslide) is the ‘05 version; not just because it’s more faithful to the book, but also because it makes the chocolate factory feel much grander in scale whilst making the characters (except for Charlie, who’s pretty much the same as the book; being more of an audience stand-in whereas the ‘71 version made him more human) more interesting (Mike Teevee comes to mind especially, as he wasn’t really that bad of a kid in the ‘71 version, especially compared to ‘05 Mike). Don’t get me wrong, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a great movie, but I feel it sort of lacks the Roald Dahl feel and has pretty cheap effects. People love to shit on Tim Burton’s adaptation for being a bad “remake” (a book is allowed to have more than one adaptation, and people are also allowed to adapt it however they like (look at Pinocchio and its countless adaptations), so no, it’s not a remake at all), when it’s actually a fantastic adaptation of the original book, perfectly mixing Dahl and Burton’s styles together whilst boasting amazing special effects.

Since I’ve been on a CatCF kick ever since, I decided to make my own Willy Wonka design; combining Quentin Blake’s illustration, the ‘71 design, the ‘05 design, and my own art style. This is essentially what my ideal Wonka design would be if I made more CatCF fanart. Speaking of which, my Wonka’s characterisation would mostly be inspired by the book version and the ‘05 version; an insane genius who loves getting reactions and lacks social skills. Though I’d also take cues from the ‘71 version’s sarcasm and the fact that you never quite know if he’s telling the truth or not.
