Description This is one peace from my upcoming exhibition, and maybe book called Beyond Photography. They are mostly a bit on the dark side. but this one seemed a bit friendlier. It a about death, of course, but not only.
How do you read it? Please tell me!

The room is from an old beer Factory in Schwerin, German. Sorry for neglecting you; all my friends, but here a least is a little wave of hello from me.

hey ed
it reminds me the old Unicorn tapestries, with a twist to a more melancholic atmosphere, full of symbols that I don't completely read (the alegory)... but the white animal is so full of grace and has a stoic detached... full of secrets and intriguing work

The white deer wears a collar and chain.... it appears to be bound but on closer inspection the chain is not tethered to anything and the beast is free to leave anytime it so chooses. Is it aware of this or has it just assumed that the chain is holding it prisoner?Has it ever pulled against the chain or has it just sat docile in this room of death and decay. The collar is tight around beasts neck but it appears impassive.
I would read this as suggesting that we often make ourselves prisoners to our past.

Your observation that the white animal is docile is interesting. Maybe it just dont get it that it can leave at its own will. But it seems so peaceful, so full of love. Maybe he is waiting for the right moment to go out into the world. And it is certain that its time will come sooner or later!

Thank you very much for your comment!

FalseMaria In reply to derkert [2012-10-31 21:15:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes..thats what I meant. It might not have realised that the chain and collar were not actually holding him prisoner. He had just never tried to leave...he had just assumed that he was a prisoner because of the appearance of being tethered...he had never tested it out.Never pulled or fought against it.
Perhaps "the look" is not one of docility but stupidity.

Hello back to you, Ed!

Reading the picture - this is the moment of the white deer's freedom from this place of brokenness and decay. It's chain is already broken, it is about to stand and walk out. Its collar has the shape of a crown - it is a servant-king who paid a price for its freedom.

derkert In reply to RichardLeach [2012-10-31 21:03:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes it is a sort of hopeful picture. And the white animal looks very calm and peaceful.

And good day to you Sir as well. Hope everything is fine with you and your misses!

Thanks, Ed, yes, we're good. Hurricane Sandy went by Monday and Tuesday and we never last power or had any problems, though our sons - in Connecticut and Virginia - did for a while and friends in New York City are in a big mess over there. Mother Nature is not happy!

The room is a world, disordered and dominated by death (the skull panel) and a powerful political force (the crest with gold symbols). The white deer is a kind of perfection that has been taken prisoner. It is valued as a token of power, indicated by the golden collar and chain. It is from another another place where the natural order prevails. It is fearful that it is a prisoner, but there is hope in the fact that it's perfection is undiminished.

Very nice image, Edvard!

I just wanted to add that I have tried to give as simple an interpretation as possible. The image is a 'moment', not a narrative. It is a collection of meaningful elements, but everything is at rest. Anything beyond the image must be implied by the image or it is a disconnected speculation.

If this was a dream, every element would relate to an aspect of the dreamer. There would also be a meaningful emotional sense for the dreamer, a feeling that would relate to the experience of the dream.

It might be fair to treat this image as your dream, despite the fact that you created it deliberately. The elements are no doubt meaningful to you and you most likely respond with some range of emotion ... and intellect.

As an audience, we deal with what you have given us. I would expect that most of us respond quickly with some emotion or struggle with it. And there is curiosity and a desire to make sense of the image. We might be fairly certain of some things. Certain meanings and relationships come to mind rather quickly. But there will be variations in our responses. An important question might be ... Does the image have unresolved tensions between the elements or is there a sense of equanimity? I can see it both ways at this moment, but my initial sense was of tension or conflict. Starting from the same image, we have a lot of leeway to respond. It is a very nuanced image. There might be cause to argue the subtleties. But I suspect that the initial impact of the piece is it's greatest moment. That might be difficult to share, but the temptation to talk around it is strong. And while the piece grabs us up immediately, we seem to want to hang around and savor it.
