No, I think I just mixed the picture of the person with some painted background, and also painted parts digitally! Cant remember more exactly! 5-6 years old, this pic!

I like it and i love the discussion!
For me these men are the same men, hurt on the ground (perhaps defending his country) and the blue one symbolizes the life befor or after.......

Hey Melanie. I tell you I quite never had a book written about any of my pieces. I am very flattered and pleased. You are very observant β much more than I am. I dont remember exaclty how I did this peace. I think it put toghether from 4 differnet sources. You see I man really painter at all. Many of my stuff look like painting but are more like mixes. So part if the boy is from a photograph and lying figure is from a another photo. The ground and "skye" i think i painted up β looks like it.
Yes the green boy is exactly the way you describe him. I cant comment on everything you write β that would be neven a longer book than yours. And you are NOT ranbeling!
What makes me the most happy is that that you find the image inspiring. That is to me the ultimate compliment!
And by the way β I usually dont know what I am aiming at β but of course the contrast between the cute boy and ground was no accident.

Paradox of beauty/pain(t), and love/suffering. Simplest of titles with a complex piece of art.
Nice.
Your work inspires me.
The complexity of the background, covered by the peaceful, gorgeous blues-greens.
That beautiful paint is serving as a sort of secret camouflage. It brings quiet to the drama beneath. Drama, obvious in the lower half. But also under the blue, in the top half. You left a suggestion of that across the top of the image, and by not fully covering it on the sides.
Perhaps not intentional.
Very nice how the boy in main focus, to my eye anyway [I don't know who he is in relation to the various plots discussed]
...but I like how you covered him with the same blue to "wear", just slightly darkened so he still stands out. A part of, and apart.
You even pulled off the details in the jacket and shirt. So subtle. It makes me think of dictatorship uniforms, but also somehow effeminate in quality.
Great skill creating the illusion of his clothing and body, and then placing his hands exactly right. Believable as part of him, but also so other-worldly in feel.
Excellent color combinations. You so nailed these colors.
Slashes, or splashes of the perfect shades of red, golds, browns. Held like a bouquet, leaves of autumn. Hmmmm...and that echo of leaves with more pink in the red, not fallen yet. In the corner of the boy in struggle/pain.
But those leaves are floating overhead, hinting of what lies under the blue, over the other young man's image.
His face is great. Can't take my eyes off him. Innocent/alluring?
His expression, sweet? condescending? So alive and so mannequin. Gentle, or to be feared? In control pleasantly, or obsessively? That perfect hair.
Wonderful contrast of all the dimensions. The stark, absolute precision of the edge which cuts across the chaos of the rest of the background.
I keep trying to see what you put in, to make that background.
The "blue boy's" background has sharp edges, while the "camouflaged" boy you allowed contrast by blurring his chaos background. So his own sharp edges may gain more attention clearly.
I don't plan my work past a certain point. I don't know about you.
I am surprised at what I do, once I let go and enter in. Curiosity and adventure are what drive me as an artist, along with great doses of emotion.
This has emotion and that makes it stand out. Pulls on everyone's subconscious to release something. The power of good art.
Thanks for sharing yourself. I like this kind of image much better than a straight copy of what the lense of a camera can capture.
Not to say photography isn't emotional and beautiful too. Or a place with plenty of room for genius and skill.
I'm rambling. I can't wait to look in on the rest of your gallery. Your icon is familiar, and very unique.
Maybe I've been there before.
I found this piece of your work in someone's fave gallery.

Let me guess, the green guy made fun of the blue guy because of the flowers, so the blue guy (which happens to know a few karate moves) kicked the green guy's ass.
Or maybe the blue guy is evil an refuse to call the ambulance to help the green guy in this difficult moment just because he has little credit on his cellphone.
Or I don't know.

Good questions! To tell the truth I dont know. (as usually) Bt it has to to do with beauty/art and how it relates or non relates to pain and suffering. There is a moral question there all right. Glad you you saw it! I didnt want to spell it out in in the title!

You're welcome, you made a good work implying the beauty/art/pain thing here, I was trying to see which story could fit there, good thing that even when your piece is quite clear still is flexible, so many stories can fit.

When I saw the thumbnail I said to myself, "Oh, a nice cheerful one!" - only to find this mix of cheerfulness and pain. I don't think I understand it - though it's very well done, very beautiful. Has the blue boy turned his back on the suffering figure, or is the suffering figure an aspect of the blue boy he is trying to leave behind - that is the interesting question.

derkert In reply to RichardLeach [2009-12-02 12:17:17 +0000 UTC]
I dont know β but it is about art/beauty and how it relates to suffering. Art for art's sake or or art to help the poor and needy. Art as a hammer. I am not very keen on political art and I cant see that artist have a greater obligation to do anything political β but ethical dilemmas are everywhere!

The blue man is in another world. I think it has something to do with his cravat. It is okay that the blue man is in the blue world because this is all about that color blue to me. I feel bad that you did not choose to give the writhing guy on the right some blue to heal him. Bad Mr. Derkert!
