Oh Muse, pray sing to me of peace
     for I have been a man of war.
Oh Earth, forgive my strikes at peace
     of mind, for I did judge it black
     with great slaughter and justice wronged.
Oh Man, embrace the war I made
     on your own hearts to set them true.
Oh Dawn, with hope be sure to show
     that greater one to come, whose hands
     shall blessedly set right and heal
     the open wound I sought to make.
Oh God, permit that I should see
     his face before I touch the end.
