Description

“Its wings can carry this Pokémon close to an altitude of 4,600 feet.”

This piece of art was made on the spur of the moment for a group of friends of mine who had been very nice to me. This group of friends knew that I was interested in Pokémon, and I wanted to make them something as a small thank you. I knew that most of them were aware of the early days of Pokémon, so it seemed best to draw a famous Pokémon right back from Generation I. The more I thought about it, the more Charizard seemed an excellent choice!

I made a physical version of this piece of art and put it up in a common room that these people use regularly. I drew this work back in December, and happened to stop by by chance in that same common room earlier this week. This Charizard was still hanging where I had left him over eight months earlier. That made me happy, to say the least. I’m pleased that he is still being well received!

Because of the quick decision I made to draw this picture, I ended up having very little time to work on it. I was only passing through and staying the night, and after that I was travelling to do some work and visit family. I wouldn’t return for several weeks, so if I wanted to get the picture ready in time for the new term, I had less than a day to work on it. As a result, this picture ended up being drawn in less than ideal circumstances!

About half of the work was drawn on a crowded train from York to Oxford. This is the first time I have drawn on transport, and I am happy that it was not as difficult as I had expected. The jolts of the train’s movements weren’t too severe and, while I did sometimes have to redraw some lines and edges because of the movement, it didn’t significantly interfere with the process of drawing. It was actually a very fun way to spend a long train journey, and I expect I will end up doing something similar on some future journeys!

When I arrived home, I had another surprise. While I had been away, a crack has opened in the ceiling of my kitchen that was spilling water onto the kitchen floor. I called in a plumber, but they couldn’t arrive until after I had left the following day. I had to resort to keeping the water at bay with pans that evening. Thankfully, the water flow was slight enough that I managed to prevent any further flooding while I was there. The trouble was fixed by the excellent plumbing and maintenance staff of the college later on. It did mean, though, that I was finishing off this picture while trying not to worry about water damage in the house!

Overall, I was working on this piece of work for less than 12 hours. I made close use of a model for this work in order to study how to draw a Charizard. I am very pleased with the result in that short period of time, especially as this is the first time I have drawn this Pokémon. This Charizard is Alan, a Pokémon working with my Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team, Team Rangers. He is sporting a bandana in the traditional blue colour of the team. I was happy enough with this piece of work that I decided to draw several more pieces in the same way.

his piece of art is one of three short pieces drawn to celebrate Pokémon’s 20th anniversary. Each drawing shows one of the three normal final evolutions of the three Kanto starters. Please do have a look at <Blastoise > and <Venusaur > as well!

I wanted to find some suitable music for this artwork, and I couldn’t help but choose this:

<Pokémon Theme (Movie version) >

The Charizard is modelled on a Charizard from the Pokémon anime. The model can be found <here >. If anyone knows which episode this features in, please let me know!
