this piece reminds me of a malay folklore. Have you heard of the "penanggal?"
It is a hideous, fearsome ghost- predominantly female, who feeds on the blood of pregnant women to stay young and beautiful. a penanggal is basically a "flying head." In the day, she seems like a normal, beautiful young woman- by night time she detaches from her body, and becomes a flying head, her entrails dripping beneath her. this hideous ghost then goes around searching for unfortunate victims.
This head here does not have entrails, but the image comes close, in my mind.
