What if this suddenly occurred during an argument between Steven and the gems... before the events of A Single Pale Rose? Amethyst would abruptly call out of turn, a genuine look of concern on her face: "S-Steven! What happened to your eyes?!"
Garnet would just stare at Steven, speechless as she tried to look into the path of the future to figure out what was happening.
Pearl would just CRASH. She would fall to the floor and look at Steven pleadingly, as if he were a Diamond about to shatter her on the spot. She would hold her hands to her mouth for as long as she could hold it until she finally muttered under her breath, tears scrubbing off her face, and made an unmistakable diamond symbol with her arms:
"My Diamond. I am so, so sorry... I-I wanted to tell you for so long..."
