The underground factory was completely flooded so many times that XinXin was totally used to it. However, she was aware that one day being under just a second longer than sustainable would be her "game over."

If she did die, maybe her brain would be saved and put into an android body like the others. Not something she'd want to think too long about however.

Inspired of sorts by Oxygen Not Included (steampowered.com) , a space sim where you control "duplicants" to colonize subterranean alien worlds. There are pockets of water that you need to manage (among other resources). In order to fulfill particular tasks, your duplicants would need to hold their breath in those pockets. They will drown if they stay under too long of course.

Might become a full story. Working on XinXin's bio atm.
