1959 Desoto Diplomat, gouache on board. Painted this about 12 years ago for a friend of mine who owned the car, was quite pleased with the chrome at the time but wish i'd done more with the background.Related content

Wow! I like the composition with the car filling the page at an interesting angle. I don't have a problem with the background. The star is the car, and i have found out that elaborate backgrounds do not work well. Or, at least, i have trouble with them. Your proportions are great, and you did an excellent job on the foreshortening. You really nailed the lines and character of this fine old car. You have a beautiful range of values here. And sterling use of value changes to show the planes and contours of the old gal. It's an excellent piece of work!

thanks for that! I feel like I've matured since this was produced, about 10 years ago, which is perhaps why I'd try and do more with the background. I'm with you as far as the car being the focal point, but the sky/grass option always felt like a bit of a copout to me
