It's a cool morning somewhere in the American Wild West. Taking your morning hike, you start to climb a grassy hill, but a sound from the top makes you stop suddenly. Looking up, you see a massive white mountain of fur an horns blocking your way. Exhaling a steamy breath, a huge white buffalo glares angrily at you. It's time to turn and walk away slowly...or very very quickly.
Again returning to one of my favorite subjects: the White Buffalo.Β

This reminds me of a subplot in the novel Widdershins by Charles de Lint. The spirits of all the dead buffalo were going to rise up and wipe the non-native settlers off the continent (the fairies they brought with them pissed them off), it ended when a relatively minor (but smart ass) character showed up and reminds the ghosts they can't affect the material world.
Frankly, I think he got about halfway into the book, realize that plot wasn't the story he really wanted to tell and wrapped it up quickly (maybe 2/3 of the way through the book in an unrewarding way) so he could tell the main plot about a middle-aged trauma survivor who was magically transported, physically, into her own mind where the memory of her abuser has godlike powers. (Which was one of the most emotionally intense stories I ever read and I had to take breaks because it was overwhelming.)
