Description An unusual looking bear, the now extinct short faced bear, sits in the deep grass on the rocky shore of a prehistoric North American wetland. He faces to the right of the image, looking towards the rising sun which bathes the seen in golden light. Some puffy white clouds drift lazily in the sky.

The short-faced bear, or Arctodus Simus, is an genus of bear that inhabited North America during the last ice age and went extinct about 10,000 years ago. It may have been the largest predatory land mammal of its day. Experts disagree on the exact nature of it's diet, but there is speculation that it would steal other predator's kills by using its intimidating size to run them off.

This image is part of my paleoart series. It an an artwork depicing a scene of one of the largest animals of the pleistocene era North America.

Note: this scene uses purchased content.

Tools used: Poser, Vue, GIMP

Thanks for looking!
Daniel

Wonder if they would make good zoo attractions.

The scientists who suggest a specialist scavenger/kleptoparasite lifestyle for this beats obviously haven't seen the studies that show the bear (and any flightless vertebrate) would starve to death if it tired that.

No problem, it looks amazing, do you work illustrating books or something? because I can easily imagine this kind of illustrations in a book about prehistoric animalsΒ

I do the occasional illustration contract - maybe two or three a year. Β Most are actually fantasy works rather than prehistoric animals.

Wow!
I admit that from the preview I thought something like "oh, well,...just another animal sitting in the grass, somewhere..."
but when I opened it now I was like ...flashed back by how amazingly you hit the light and the atmosphere!
And I am totally excited about how alive this bear looks!....and how I can read in its expression,...this almost sad look into a future which is no future for this animal.
It's not at all "just another animal..." its totally great and touching work, again.
Thank you!
