I had to cosplay from Sailor Moon, eventually! Like so many other cosplayers, my first exposure to Japanese animation was Sailor Moon. I ended up picking Venus, after reading Codename Sailor V, and I wanted to do some sort of nod to the original Sailor senshi, and of all the inner senshi I thought she was the one I could pull off well.

I used Cupcake Cosplay's sailor senshi fuku tutorial for help and ideas on handling certain components of the costume [link] My costume is made of lycra for the suit and gloves, and casa satin for all the accents. As described in the tutorial, the skirt is two circle skirts put together and pleated. The collar and bows are all interfaced for added structure. I even satin stitched along the stripe on the collar to make it more polished, but I'm thinking about redoing the collar because I'm not 100% happy with it.

The rings took some trial and error. The first time I put one together, I decided it looked too lumpy. I ended up purchasing some batting intended for clothes (it comes in a thin sheet) and lining the inside of my rings with the batting, before stuffing them with polyfil. I think the end result was a lot more successful, than my first attempt.

The chain belt is my favorite component on the costume. I always loved how Naoko Takeuchi sometimes drew the senshi with their own unique accessories. Each of the gems were casted by me, using casting epoxy, a paint palette for the mold, and red resin dye. After casting, the resin gems were adhered to round wooden discs, which had been painted gold, for the backings. The belt was then put together using several jumprings, which were put through holes that I drilled into the wooden discs, before adhering the gems.

Expect more sailor senshi cosplay from me in the future. These are surprisingly fun to make, and I would like to be able to improve and perfect the techniques I used for my next fuku!
