An artwork I commissioned from the ever-brilliant depicting the primary characters of my Avatar alternate universe story, 'What I Learned at SRU.'
From left to right, the 'Fearless Five': Toph, Sokka, Jane (Smellerbee), Katara and Aang. This picture portrays a scene from very close to the end of the story -- Sokka is visiting campus for Homecoming and telling his friends about his post-grad life.

Yup. People do, in fact, wear flip-flops from time to time.
Though in this character's case, it's more a reference to a disliking of shoes and preferring bare feet.

I know but when was the last time you saw a tomboy openly show off her petite feet? (not counting Toph who is perpetually barefooted). I have a tomboy character who does wear sandals however.

Yes, this artist is fantastic -- probably the best at managing to recreate the characters into my designs as older people, but also capturing details of their faces so they still look like the characters they're based on.
Alexander has done plenty of art for this project, and all of it is beautiful.

Totally digging toph's hair and the overall composition!

We went through three different compositions on the rough sketch stage, but I liked this one the best.
I also like how he drew Toph's hair here, as well. It takes the double-braid idea from the Homecoming piece (which itself is based on Toph dressing up fancy in Book 2 of the show) but loosens it up a little.

Great job with all the characters here! Aang and Katara being a good audience, Jane chilling, Toph sort of doing her own thing, and Sokka running his mouth. I really, really like this illustration. It's probably my favorite SRU one that I've seen so far. Surprisingly nice background too! All impressionistic with the trees... or whatever...

Whoa... this piece is just awesome!! I mean, look at all the details: the "earth" symbol in Toph's bag, how she seems to be moving her toes - as if she was tying to 'see' by feeling with her feet - , all the references to the ATLA world... and the guy's different expressions! It is just perfect. The composition of the image is excellent, also. It is so simple and yet it transmits so many personal feelings from the characters and kind of a... shared feeling of comfort among them, like if they all felt "at home" while being together. At least that is what it transmitted to me.
In a few worlds, a fantastic drawing.
I also can't wait to read more of the story! (I'm still in chapter 9 so I have a loooong way to go). Keep up the great work, Hoodsun and Destiny-Smasher!

I'm glad you like this piece! I feel the same way, and it's quickly become one of my top favorites in the SRU series.
The funny part is that while some of these details were my ideas (their outfits, Toph's shoes being off), the actual specific expressions and poses were all his doing in this particular picture, and he managed to capture it all so well, even though I don't think he actually reads the story. I guess he just has a very good talent at intuition.

Ahhhh, hahaha. ^_^; Not really, but kind of? She's the SRU version of Smellerbee. But I took lots of liberties in her redesign. Here's a few better examples where she looks more like 'Smellerbee.'

I mean, she is kind of like an OC in that she's a main character in this universe, but was only a minor character in the show -- so I had to come up with a lot of elements of her character to flesh her out.

Oh, now I get the design on her boots! XD That's cool, and in terms of critique, I can safely say that your artwork is gorgeous. Really, I searched long and hard for points of it that could be worked on, and all I can really say is the trees in the background make it seem like the sky is ballooning out. Bur even that could be considered artistic choice and looks like a not-too- fussy touch to the whole thing. And I'm pretty sure Smellerbee has brown hair.
