Description
If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumbered here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend:
If you pardon, we will mend:
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue,
We will make amends ere long;
Else the Puck a liar call;
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends.
I have been wanting to do another Shakespeare cast meme for a while because I love Shakespeare and I think that after the successof my Macbeth one I did last year, I was thinkin this year I would do a comedy this time round.
Like with my Raggedy Ann one earlier this week, I saved this one when JamieTheFandomGirl used to be on here and I was planning on doing it, but I had a hard tiem with some of the casting. Luckily for me, I was able to finally to find some good roles and put it up in time.
A Midsummer Night's Dream was always my favorite Shakespeare comedy as it's got magic, romance, comedy and it's just a fun story. While questionable in some of the morals, it's just oe of the silliest and romantic stories that Shakespeare has done.
Short Story: Hermia refuses to marry the man her father arranges for her: Demetrius, her best friend Helena's ex-boyfriend. Faced with the decision to marry Demetrius, die or become a nun by the day of Duke Theseus's wedding, Hermia decides to elope with Lysander with Helena and Demetrius' following suit. They end up crossing paths with some fairies who have a love potion that causes a mix-up among the main lovers, themselves and a group of actors rehearsing for a play to perform at the wedding.
*For Gwen and Trent's bios, I am only doing the first season
*This version takes place takes place in a mix of past/present day kingdom almost similar to Disenchantment.
So, let's meet the players of this take on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Hermia-Gwen(Total Drama Island)-In the play, Hermia is a girl from a wealthy family who is at odds with fate because of her father wanting her to marry Demetrius, but she wants to marry her boyfriend Lysander. However, she is faced with three decisions: marry Demetrius like her father wanted, be executed or become a nun in a convent. However, she and Lysander decide to elope, but they end up getting lost in the woods. While sleeping seperately from Lysander(as it's not good to sleep unwedded during the play's time), Hermia wakes up to find Lysander gone. She goes to look for him, but is pursued by Demetrius who tries to convince her to marry him, but she refuses. Later, she finds that not only has Lysander fallen for her best friend Helena(unaware htat Puck accidentally put the love potion on him instead of Demetrius) and now Demetrius is after her too. This leads to the girls fighting about the whole affair until Puck makes them go to sleep. When Hermia wakes up, Lysander is her boyfriend again(he got an antidote) and Theseus allows the two of them to marry. Before Action and later seasons fucked her over to the being the butt monkey, Gwen was kind of that girl that everyone wanted to obtain, but her eyes were mostly on Trent. While at first aloof to Trent, she grew fond of him and instantly formed a connection. A misunderstanding involving Trent kissing Heather leads to Gwen's heart being broken, but her heart is broken further when it's revealed that Heather got everyone to vote Trent off, but Trent promises her to be strong. Gwen continues to be a strong contender until she reaches the final two. Whether she wins or loses, she forgives Trent and goes out with him.
Lysander-Trent(Total Drama Island)-Lysander is Hermia's boyfriend whom her father Egeus doesn't like. Lysander loves Hermia with all his heart and he'd do anything to be with her even if it means defying Athenian law or fighting with Demetrius. So when Hermia is offered to marry Demetrius, become a nun or die, Lysander and Hermia decide to elope. However, they get lost in the woods. While sleeping seperately from Lysander(as it's not good to sleep unwedded during the play's time), Puck mistakengly puts the love potion on Lysander, thinking he was Demetrius. This causes Lysander to fall in love with Helena, Hermia's best friend who has been spurned by Demetrius and pursue her. When Demetrius(also under the love potion) falls for Helena as well, Lysander and Demetrius engage in a duel over her just like they did with Hermia while the girls fight over themselves. Puck fixes this by knocking them out and putting the antidote on Lysander's eyes, leading to Lysander thinking what had happened was just a dream and also rekindling his love for Hermia. When confronted by Egeus, Theseus, Hippolyta and the hunting party, Lysander confesses to what he and Hermia tried to do, but since Demetrius breaks the engagement to marry Helena, Theseus allows Lysander and Hermia to marry. Trent starts off the series as a kind hearted camper who took an interest in Gwen at first glance, however, she was not willing to trust anybody. He does manage to win her over by talking to her and even forming a connection with her. He even was willing to be there for her whne she faced the challenge of being buried alive. Then said connection lead to romance, Trent gets tricked by Heather into meeting her at the dock and then being forced to kiss her just as Gwen was coming by. This misunderstanding causes Heather to move forward, but everyone to vote Trent off. Trent leaves telling Gwen to be strong fro them. He even thinks about Gwen durign his time at the Plaza de Losers and then when Gwen gets into the finals, he comes back to support her. Wheter Gwen wins or loses, Trent and Gwen both get together in the end.
Demetrius-Robbie Valentino(Gravity Falls)-Demetrius is Hermia's arranged fiancee and also her best friend Helena's ex-boyfriend. He was arranged to marry Hermia, but she refuses to marry him for she rather marry Lysander. Sometime before the play, he and Helena used to date, but then he broke up with her when he became engaged to Hermia. After Hermia goes to elope with Lysander, Demetrius decides to go after them, spurning Helena in the process. He finds Hermia looking for Lysander and tries to convince her ot marry him, but Hermia refuses, so he goes off...and then gets a dose of love potion on him by Puck causing him to fall in love with Helena(again). But when he finds Lysander(also love potioned by Puck) in love with Helena as well, the two boys decide to fight over her while the girls fight themselves. When Puck knocks them out and puts them to sleep, the love spell ends up absorbing into Demetrius(probably because for some reason he fell in love with her again during this whole time. ). When confronted by Egeus, Theseus, Hippolyta when they wake up, Demetrius tells them that he no longer loves Hermia and would rather marry Helena which he does. So, Robbie was a character that I though would be befitting for this. Robbie charms into Wendy's arms during the first season of Gravity Falls and even forms a rivalry with Dipper for Wendy's affections, acting like a total bully. After he tried to brainwash her, she broke up with him. Robbie tries in desperate vain to get WEndy to reconsider their break up to no avail. It takes a love potion from Mabel to get him to fall in love with Tambry, Wendy's best friend more or less. Of course, the spell lasts three hours and despite this, he forms a connection with her and becomes her boyfriend for real. Of course, I headcanon he had to prove to Tambry she's his type.
Helena-Tambry(Gravity Falls)-Helena is Hermia's best friend and Demetrius's ex-girlfriend. Despite promising not to tell of Hermia and Lysander's elopement, Helena decides to tell Demetrius to get close to him. When they get to the woods, Demetrius rejects her causing her to walk alone...until she encounters Lysander who falls in love with her(unaware that Puck accidentally puts the love potion on him instead of Demetrius). She rejects Lysander's affections, but is surprised when Demetrius(put the love potion on) falls in love with her too. The confusion causes both men to fight for her, but also for Helena and Hermia to get themselves in a fight as well. After Puck makes them go to sleep and fixes everything, Helena not only gets Demetrius as a husband, but also Helena as her best friend again. Tambry was the best friend of Wendy who was always on her phoen and didn't care about anything, including Robbie. Hell, when you think about it, other than Nate, no other guy would notice Tammbry or even fall in love with her. After she and Robbie both ate love potion-spiked fries(thanks to Mabel), she and Robbie fall in love. And surprisingly enough, the potion only wears off after three hours and it turns out that Tambry did have a good time with Robbie and eventually becomes his girlfriend for real. However, I believe that after it wore off, Tambry had to make sure Robbie was THE one before agreeing to go with him.
Egeus-Brother Cellah(The Secret of Kells)-Egeus is Hermia's strict, traditionalist and tempremental father who comes to Theseus at the beginning of the play when Hermia refuses to marry the man she chose for him Demetrius. He even states that it is Athenian law that the daughter should marry whoever the father chooses or she shall die. However, Theseus being a nice guy allows Hermia to make a decision by his wedding day. Later Egeus appears with he, Hippolyta, Theseus and the hunting party arrive in the woods in time to see the main lovers there. Egeus demands to know what is going on. Lysander confesses what happened, but before Egeus could tell him Demetrius is to marry Hermia, Demetrius tells Egeus that he's no longer in love with Hermia and is now in love with Helena. Theseus decides to have the two couples marry at the same time as him and Hippolyta and lets Hermia marry Lysander. Egeus is disheartened that the arranged marriage didn't go through, but complies and maybe one day has a change of heart. Since Egeus was one of those "stubborn, traditional, strict" father type characters Brother Cellah is the similar way. He wants his whole town and monastary to be safe from the invaders even if it means keeping Brendan under lock and key and forbidding him to experience things like reading and exploring. Even seeing his good fellow member Aiden not in Cellah's mind. However, he wants what is best for everyone, but his bullheadedness leads to conflicts within the other monasteries and for Brendan. It would eventually come to a head where the wall that he ordered built ended up bringing teh invaders in destroying the town while Brendan manages to escape. Cellah spends the last of his life regretting his actions until Brendan becomes a young man and he later asks for forgiveness.
Puck aka Robin Goodfellow-Spooky the Tough Little Ghost(Casper the Friendly Ghost)-Puck is a one of the central comic reliefs of the play, but heh's also one that plays an important role. The main servant of Oberon, Puck is known for being kind of a trickster, playing pranks on other fairies and mortals, but is loyal to Oberon. To get back at his wife Titania, Oberon orders Puck to find a Cupid's arrow orchid that would make anybody fall in love with the first person that they see. Puck does so, but when Oberon notices Demetrius hurting Helena's feelings, he orders Puck to put the love spell on "the Athenian". Unfortunately, Puck put the spell on Lysander instead. While on his way back to Oberon, he turns actor Bottom's head into that of a donkey as a joke. When Oberon finds out Puck's mistake, he orders Puck to fix it. Puck puts the love spell on Demetrius, but it makes a bigger mess and Puck has to resort to finding the antidote, knocking the lovers out and then removing the spell from Lysander's eyes. He finishes the play by saying to the audience the whole thing could be a dream. One character I thought of for this character was Spooky, who was my favorite characer from Casper as a kid. Spooky, the bowler-hat wearing, spook-addicted cousin of Casper is a prankster by nature. Every time he appears, Spooky is in for a scaring spree, messing with his fellow ghosts and whatever living being there is. This causes Capser to try and give him a taste of his own medicine as trying to coax him sometimes doesn't solve the issue. However, he doesn't like it when one messes with his bravado and thinks he can scare better than anyone can. However, he does care for his cousin and tries to make amends for his actions(but they don't last).
King Oberon-Xibalba(The Book of Life)-Oberon, King of the Fairies is the central antagonist/antihero of the play. While he loves his wife Titania, he is fed up with her stubborness and he wants to take custody of a little boy that they adopted. This leaves them estranged(but not divorced). To get back at her, he orders Puck to find her a Cupid's arrow orchid, but when he sees Helena alone after Demetrius rejects her, he orders Puck to put the spell on "the Athenian". Oberon puts the love spell on Titania, but while he gets the boy, he begins to regret his actions. He even becomes angry at Puck for putting the love spell on Lysander instead and orders him to get an antidote and fix the problem while he fixes his relationship with his wife. He puts the antitdote on his wife and rekindles his relationship with her, promising to share custody of the boy and also watches the new lovers on their wedding night. Okay, I have to admit, Xibalba and La Muerte were the first to come up when I found this. Xibalba is very charismatic and very sneaky, but he also finds life to be very frutile which is what puts him at ends with La Muerte, his wife. They wager on who will end up with Maria, Manolo or Joaquin and Xibalba gives Joaquin the Medal of Everlasting Life to make him a hero. But then he decides to cheat on the bet by killing Manolo so Joaquin could marry Maria(who doesn't want to marry Joaquin even if she does like him as a friend). Upon being caught by Manolo, Xibalba gives Manolo a test to prove his worth and when he passes, a remorseful Xibalba along with the Candlemaker and La Muerte resurrect Manolo. Xibalba, remorseful for his actions, rekindles his relationship with his wife and their relationship is going strong to the present day.
Queen Titania-La Muerte(The Book of Life)-Titania, Queen of the Fairies is Oberon's (almost ex) wife. While she loves Oberon, she is frustrated by his temper and how he refuses to take a compromise as she has been given custody of a little boy that they adopted. While taking the boy in her custody, she decides to go to sleep, but is unaware that Oberon put a love spell on her that would make her fall in love with the ugliest being ever. This leads to her falling in love with Bottom who has a donkey head thanks to Puck as a prank. As such, while she and Bottom go into her bedchambers, she gives Oberon the boy. However, she is removed from the spell from a regretful Oberon and while confused on what the hell happened, she and Oberon rekindle their relationship and share custody of the boy. They then watch the new lovers on their wedding night. If I was using Xibalba, I'd be using La Muerte. Like Titania, she is kind and caring, but while she loves Xibalba, she is frustrated with him being uncaring towards life and how cold he has become. She makes a bet with Xibalba over who will win Maria's hand. She chooses Manolo for his kindness and determination. She loses the bet and ends up in the Land of the Forgotton until she finds out from a deceased Manolo that Xibalba cheated. Angered, but also knowing Manolo has a chance to live, convinces Xibalba to set a test for Manolo. Once Manolo passed, La Muerte, the Candlemaker and a remorseful Xibalba resurrect Manolo. La Muerte forgives Xibalba and they rekindle their relationship which is still going strong to the present.
Nick Bottom-Miguel(The Road to El Dorado)-Nick Bottom is a weaver who is a good person, but he is very energetic and loves to show off to his friends. When Peter Quince announces that he and the other "actors" will be performing Pyramus and Thisbe for the Duke at his wedding, Bottom is given the role of Pyramus. Of course, Bottom wants to do a one-man show, but Quince convinces him to take the role of Pyramus and to take it seriously. Whene they go into the woods to practice, Bottom goes "offstage" as a human, only to come back with a donkey head(due to Puck playing a prank on him). This scares his friends into running away leaving hismelf in the woods. Confident, he sings/brays, but encounters Titania who falls in love with him while under the love spell. He is taken to her court where he is seduced by the queen and pampered by her fairies. When all is said and done, Puck removes Bottom's ass head and Bottom wakes up thinking what has happened was just a dream. He heads back to reunite with his freinds and take the role of Pyramus. Of course, his acting is so over the top taht everyone takes it as it as a joke. Feelign good that the play was a hit nevertheless, Bottom and his freinds leave for the night. Miguel was a character who I thought would be great as Bottom because they are over the top idealists who are also kind of a jokester. Miguel's enthusasitc yet also charismatic nature is what gets him into the schemes he and Tulio pull. During their time, Miguel always had this idea where he can crack a whip at someone while Tulio tries to come up with an plan. Miguel also likes to take his role as a god seriously and even if the locals of El Dorado knew they weren't gods, he still would like to be there for them even if it means never seeing Spain again. However, he does leave with Tulio and Chel when he sees the latter in danger and reconciles with his friend.
*For Bottom's donkey head, I took inspiraton from one of Luisa's donkeys in Encanto because it was a little tricky*.
Peter Quince-Tulio(The Road to El Dorado)-Peter Quince is a carpenter, Bottom's best friend and the director of Pyramus and Thisbe, the play that the "actors' are performing for the duke at his wedding. When Quince catches word of the wedding, he announces that he will direct the play and gives everyone their assigned roles. HOwever, hwile he admires Bottom's talent, he is frustrated at the fact taht his ego would lead to him not taking the role seriously as he hoped. He even had to explain to Bottom that there is no other role he could play, but Pyramus. He then says they're going into the woods to rehearse, but are frustrated with their inept acting. He, along with the others get frightened of Bottom's transformed donkey head and run away. However, he reunites with Bottom with his head normal again the next day and perform the play...which ends up a success despite how bad they acted in it. They leave triumphant. SInce I had Miguel as Bottom, Tulio was a perfect choice for Quince. Tulio is one who's the master planner in him and Miguel's schemes and tries to come up with a plan for every sticky situation they come up in. However, his main goal is to stick to that plan like how Quince wants everyone to stick to their roles. Sometimes he gets a little annoyed if Miguel goes off script a bit, but they work together through tick and thin. Despite their differences, Tulio values Miguesl as a friend and even when they had their first argument over staying or leaving El Dorado, they patch up as soon as Miguel sacrifices his chance to stay to help Tulio and Chel with the ship when the sail gets stuck and they go on another adventure.
*The irony is that Tulio's actor Kevin Kline played Bottom in the 1999 version of the play.*
Snug, Flute, Snout and Starveling-The Mariachi Brothers(The Book of Life) and Bruno Madrigal(Encanto)-Snug, Flute, Snout and Starveling are a belos-mender, joiner, tailor and tinker respectively. They're both Quince and Bottom's friends who are called to do the roles for the Pyramus and Thisbe play for the Duke at his wedding to Queen Hippolyta. Quince casts them as these roles: FLute will be Thisbe(despite the fact that he has a beard comig), Snug will play the lion, Snout would play the wall that seperates the two lovers, and Starveling would play the moon. They all meet up in the woods to practice for the play, but when Bottom comes back onstage with an donkey's head(thanks to Puck playing a prank on him), they freak out and run away. THey later appear when Bottom appears back to normal and they perform the play, but they overact that everyone thinks it's hilarious that they think that it's a comedy. Having triumphed, the actors leave for the night.
Since all of them are minor characters with major parts, I thought I woudl give it to the Mariachi Brothers for them being comic reliefs of the story and for having this dynaimc that they have with each other and Manolo. They try to encourage Manolo to take music passion, but they also try to give him advice on what to do with both winning Maria's heart and also getting the approval of his disapproving father. They also appear when the battle of San Angel takes place and later attends Manolo and Maria's wedding. For Bruno Madrigal, despite his minor role due to him being an outcast until Mirabel came to him face to face and found him a nice guy, I can see him playing Flute due to the fact that he is very timid and shy and the fact that he has a beard coming in from his isolation from the family. He also has a tendency to have him act his telenovas with his rat friends as well as try to take on different identities.
Peasebottom, Cobweb, Moth and Mustardseed-Spectra Vondergeist, Scarah Screams, Operetta and Kiyomi Haunterly(Monster High)-Peasebottom, Cobweb, Moth and Mustardseed are Titania's servants who carry out her duties. After Titania falls in love with a donkey headed Bottom, she orders them to pamper him and take care of him, but also to have him go to her bedchambers. They woudl appear with the other fairies in certain scenes throughout the play, but they are most prominent during the scenes when Bottom is in Titania's land. So, for this, I wanted to go with some Monster High girls for them that only had minor roles so I chose Spectra, Scarah, Operretta and Kiyomi. They only have minor roles with a few episodes focusing on them, but they have shown their personalities whenever there's an episode that focueses on them. Even then, they do aid Frankie, Clawdeen, Draculaura, Lagoona and Cleo whenever they need them.
Duke Theseus-King Teca(Maya and the Three)-Duke Theseus is inspired from the one in Greek Mythology and has a minor role in the play. After winning Queen Hippolyta's heart in battle, they both prepare to marry, but bwfore they can prepare their wedding, Theseus is inturrupted by a call for him to see Egeus and his case. After observing it, but also taking pity in Hermia offers that she become a nun. But he gives her a warning that she has until his own wedding to decide if she should marry Demetrius like her father wanted, become a nun or die. He later appears at the ending where he, Hippolyta, Egeus and the hunting party arrive in the woods in time to see the main lovers there. He asks them what's going on. Lysander confesses what was going on while Demetrius tells him and Egeus that he's no longer in love with Hermia and is now in love with Helena. Theseus decides to have the two couples marry at the same time as him and Hippolyta and lets Hermia marry Lysander. He also ends up enjoying the play the actors peform for him. For this role, I wanted a reasonable warrior king for this. I chose King Teca because while he has his share of battles and flings(his relationship with Lady Micte notwithstanding), he is a kindhearted and patient husband to Queen Teca and his children including the protagonist. King Teca has a minor role in the show where he is the one who inspireds Maya to go out there and take care of the prophecy that is to happen after his three sons were killed. He stays behind to take care of his kingdom and also help his wife deliever Maya's other brother and sister. He does join in the final battle against Lord Mitichlan and when Maya sacrifices herself to defeat Lord Mitichlan, King Teca and his family look out to greet her as the goddess of the sun.
Queen Hippolyta-Queen Teca(Maya and the Three)-Queen Hippolyta is the fiancee of Duke Theseus. An Amazon warrior of heart, she fought Theseus in a battle, but it ended up winning her over. The two prepare to wed, but before they can plan out their wedding, Theseus is called to deal with Egeus. SHe later appears at the ending where she, Theseus, Egeus and the hunting party arrive in the woods in time to see the main lovers there. When Theseus says that Hermia and Lysander as well as Demetrius and Helena would be married alongside them, Hippolyta agrees as it's a good idea. She and Theseus as well as the other couples even enjoy the play the "actors" put on for them. Queen Teca is the wife of King Teca and we don't know anything about her past, but I believe that he won her over in a battle against her(I have a feeling this is how he meets his allies and enemies) and they get married and have three sons the Jaguar trio. Queen Teca even adopts Maya, the baby of her husband's affair with Lady Micte as her own despite it taking a while to forgive her husband. While Maya goes out to take care of the prophecy that is to happen after her brothers were killed, she stays behind to take care of his kingdom and also deliever Maya's other brother and sister. She does join in the final battle against Lord Mitichlan and when Maya sacrifices herself to defeat Lord Mitichlan, Queen Teca and her family look out to greet her as the goddess of the sun.
