aka... the weirdos.

i had a lot of fun designing these three... uh four, especially since they all tend to get characterized pretty similarly. phear is usually the voice-of-reason guy, at least in most fics i've read, or at least he's more mellow than those around him. to that i say, haha no, according to the game he's literally just a one-dimensional race announcer, so in this fic a one-dimensional race announcer he is. also, a crazy man who wears a skull just for grins. his outfit was kind of designed to look like half of a rider's uniform while also being reminiscent of the booth-thingy he rides in, and he's not wearing a shirt because honestly the one thing i remember about phear lap is his big weird ribcage.

whilst looking up color reference for pip and dot i discovered that they actually have quite the fanbase, and tend to either be human adults or small domino piece-things of indeterminate age. so i suppose it's quite fitting that i merged those two concepts into... two bratty british kids. and heck if i'm not on board with that, pip is so fun to draw with his bitter sass. the two of them are like over a hundred years old by the way, all the staff is technically. but it was especially funny to think about how cranky they'd get being a domino of indeterminate age for a century and then just going back to being dumb kids. like that's almost a downgrade. but i digress.

i. hecking. love pool. so mangosteen is basically the only casino boss i legitimately like. i think i understand why everyone sees him as this big muscle-type guy, but to be honest i always saw him as just some weird dude who hangs out in the corner waiting for someone to swindle. also fun fact, the eight-ball eyes thing is actually part of the concept art for mango's canon design! i thought that was a cool coincidence when i found it out a few days after drawing up my design for him the first time.
