May 16th is my birthday, and I usually get some very thoughtful and unexpected gifts from my friends online, largely pictures like this that I write up a little story for, but in this case, I think the actual story behind the gift itself is more interesting.

Back in the fall, I got a used Nintendo Switch system, which had belonged to my friend Jurgen. When he upgraded to a better system he offered to send me his old system, and I happily accepted. It’s been a great system and I am very grateful to Jurgen for it, though I only had acouple games for it, I admit, I do most of my gaming on a Sony system, but I enjoy the Switch games I had. Well, apparently Jurgen reached out to three other friends of mine online, Yuppi, RPX and Oliver, and together they ordered me a bunch of Switch games to add to my collection, each of them choosing a game. Well, when the packages from Amazon started arriving (of course they didn’t all show up in a single box), I was certainly not expecting them, but I was told not to open them till my birthday, and I listened. Needless to say, I was really surprised, I would never have expected such gifts, and the thoughtfulness behind these gifts was really touching, I was so thankful to have such great friends. .

However, there was still another surprise, that was even more unexpected. They had all collabed together on a picture from Usagiforehead of my Ember sitting and playing games, while their characters cheered her on, each of them dressed as a character from the game they had gotten for me. This is a really creative and clever idea, and a great and fun picture. I love Ember’s focused expression (we’ve all been there), and all her friends in costume look really good. I’ll let you all figure out what characters they are, from what games. .

In this day and age gifts for birthdays and such have become so bland, people often defaulting to gifts cards and similar. Which gift cards are certainly very useful and practical, they are very impersonal, no really thought behind them, and no real surprise either just quick and easy. There is a saying that ‘It’s the thought that counts’ and I’ve always held that to be true. Gifts should be special, they should be fun, they should be a surprise, and there should definitely be thought behind them, yet very few people seem to see it that way anymore. Well, this definitely proves that not everyone thinks that way, cause between the games and this picture, there was A LOT of thought put into all this, it was all a huge, and very fun, surprise, and it is indeed very special. I am very lucky to have such amazing friends. .
