Every day the sun faithfully climbs above the horizon to shine its warmth on everything that it touches. We wait, with great anticipation, for the first glimpse of light that comforts us and gives promise to our hopes and a new day. Every sunrise is a revelation of life in motion. Don’t wait for it; seek it.

Getting out of bed at 4am for a sunrise can be a daunting task. Everything about such an event is fraught with risk. The darkness can be foreboding and the early hour seems somewhat unnatural. Working in the dark with a camera, lens, and tripod can be an exercise in fumbling and frustration. There is a lonely solitude at 4am that requires awareness of your surroundings and paying attention to your personal safety. Finally, with all of that under control, there is no guarantee of what the sunrise will look like. It may be flat and featureless or it might be colorful and immensely powerful. You never know what you will get but, no matter how many times I do it, my heart races with anticipation for what the sunrise will bring for color, inspiration, and meaning.

Standing in the sand of Cape Cod at 5am I could see and feel the world in motion around me. To my left the ocean calmly moved in its familiar rhythm. In front of me the clouds clung low to the horizon and seemed to be moving toward the warm glow of dawn. To my right the darkness began to yield to morning. There I was, standing before a world in motion, but I was not content to be merely a spectator. I moved with the hope of a new day. I created. I was present.
