If they were, it was mainly because their label, Geffen marketed them in such a way that caused a mainstream audience to embrace them. Like most major labels, selling out is part of the contract. It's not like Nirvana had much of a choice because their former label, Sub Pop was abusing them.

Actually, (I think you're referring to the cover of.. The Rolling Stone[?]) But they've stated that they never wanted to do the photo shoot to begin with, thus explaining the t-shirt Kurt was wearing on the cover. Furthermore, Kurt had been known to satritize mainstream things whenever he got the chance. So, if anything-- Nirvana was taking advantage of their mainstream status by condoning the media machine in which they were trapped in. Nothing better than killing the beast from the inside. Hehehe.
