Description Developed for Jim Wangers to terrify and humiliate local Detroit-area enthusiasts, this 1968 Firebird Blackbird incorporated many performance tricks learned at Royal Pontiac. Originally equipped with a Ram Air I engine and column-shift automatic transmission, it's currently packing a brutal 455-cubic inch engine and a massaged Turbo 400 tranny.

While the Blackbird wasn't built at Royal Pontiac, then-owner Jim Wangers wanted a standout paint scheme. The black/gold combo had been used at Royal Pontiac to good effect with the full line of Bobcatted cars, and with Wangers ties to Royal, he wanted to acknowledge that connection.

The Blackbird was fitted with Royal Automotive-built 455-cubic inch engine, but when that engine broke, leader Automotive constructed a new 455 engine. This powerplant will haul the Blackbird down the quarter-mile in the 10-second range.
