I agree that you're probably hurting them more by refusing to be with them than actually being with them. How do you know they'll end up being hurt? You may become, may already be, the best thing in their life.
Sometimes shit happens, but the memories you make through the rough times are what makes you feel so alive. :3

... Well, you're hurting them by not giving them any choice. Give it a go, and see what happens. Maybe you'll be right, and there will be pain at the end of it, but at least you'll have some fun along the way.
And maybe you'll be wrong, and you'll get a whole lot more out of it than you thought.
