Saying the words aren't the only way to show your love... but when you do say the words, it's final. I can see why the ST wrote that part. But if you both feel like that, surely something can happen, even just to talk to a mutual friend about things...

From my perspective I think the ST is saying the one who says, "I love you" first is the loser means that they are the one more invested in the relationship and are the one who will be hurt more if it ends, therefore they lose.

But if you are in a relationship with someone and you love each other, its not a race to say it first or last. and if someone really thinks because they said I love you first means they will be hurt more when it ends.
Then sadly the relationship will end. Because they have no faith in it at all if thats what they think

Nah, you're not old-fashioned, just reasonable*. And probably unused to seeing people's hearts completely disconnected from their brains {which causes lack of blood supply to the brain, resulting in the distorted feelings shown in this and similar secrets}.
*PS: on 2nd thought, it is quite possible that reason went out of fashion recently. I don't really follow the times, but that would explain a LOT. :

The world is incredibly superficial at times, and it's no wonder some people consider it losing when they are the ones to say "I love you". They lose their power. They're vulnerable.
I don't want any part of that kind of world though and it's good to you're struggling with the idea too
