Description
Countdown to Destruction was a big moment for Power Rangers. Not only is it the finale to the season,it's the finale to the entire run of the show up until that point. It's so satisfying seeing literal years of characters and continuity being acknowledged. We get to see old allies,like the Alien Rangers,Trey,the Blue Senturion,the Phantom Ranger,all on other planets, fighting back against Dark Spectre's forces. Old villains are back,too. Rita,Zedd,the Machine Empire, Divatox, as well as hundreds of monsters and footsoldiers. Most of them get a few lines,which is really nice. It shows that they're remembered as characters,not just props for the plot.
Dark Spectre has launched his ultimate attack,and is close to winning. The Space Rangers defend Earth as best they can,but are quickly overpowered by the massive army of Quantrons and Piranhatrons. Astronema is readying a planet-destroying lazer,but it's stolen by Darkonda. Ever the despicable slimeball,he plans on using it on Dark Spectre and taking over his evil empire.
He manages to destroy Dark Spectre, but gets bit back as a result,literally. With Dark Spectre gone,Astronema has assumed leadership. Her visage appears in the sky of the conquered planets,leading to a funny bit with Divatox. "NOT HER,AGAIN!" As the Piranhatrons around her bow to the new leader,she screams at them to get back up."Dont pray to her! You work for ME!"
This episode is filled with so many iconic images,the music is epic,and the scale of the situation is so wonderfully portrayed.
This episode is fanservice heavy,but not in a bad way,or a lazy way. Everything happening is happening for a reason. Actually, there's even more stuff they could've tossed in to make it more fanservice-y,like showing heroes from other Saban shows in battle,the VR Troopers, Beetleborgs,Masked Rider,the Next Mutation Ninja Turtles, but that would overinflate this already packed episode. I love it, one of PR's best.
