Description One of those rare times to show the process behind the madness.

Being an inker, I'm probably groomed to be impatient. It comes with the territory...just being able to jump right into working on a page with the pencils already laid out in front of me. Just pick up whatever inking tool I have, and go to town. So when I pencil and ink myself, I'm just as impatient. Which is why I could never do both with any sort of quality regularity. And also why I hardly show the process...because usually as soon as I sit down and draw a piece...it's so loose and rough that I jump directly or skip into the inks pretty fast. So fast, that it's usually quicker for me to ink/finish the piece than it is to stop and scan it in steps.

*whew* long winded

Anyways... usually I'm not skilled enough (comfortable enough) to pencil the pose right on the page without any forethought. So whether I'm at home or conventions, I like to have some type of scrap paper handy to doodle up thumbnail poses and get a feel for how I want to layout the pencils. I keep the thumbnails to just an inch or two in size and fast and loose. And sadly, they usually end up looking more alive and better than the final result, which always comes off stiff to me.

So here I've cut and pasted a couple of the thumbnails I did with whatever regular pencil I have handy (just a standard No.2 leaded pencil). The finished pencil I draw in col erase blue pencil, just because it keeps it light and less messy to ink over than if I were to scratch it out with a normal lead. And this blueline drawing is probably even more tight than I normally do, since I do most of the drawing/finishing in the inking stage. But sometimes with more complex designs, I will pencil it out a little tighter than normal.

Looking at this, he comes off a little more stumpy in the final pencil than in the thumbnail...which is always the problem I have (sometimes less obvious than other times). So we'll see what happens in the inking stage, if I do much correcting or if I just jump in and ink it up. heh

Oh yeah, if it's not apparent...it's Lobo.

Frag off!

looking through all of your own stuff that you inked makes me want to read a book that you pencil and ink yourself, have you done that yet, or do you just do ink work professionally and your character work is just personal and for conventions? either way i really enjoy your work.

Pretty much the latter. Only time I really penciled and inked a short story was for an issue of Emily The Strange at Dark Horse. Eventually I might get my act together and find the time and ambition to tackle doing something on my own. Until then, I'm happy to continue slinging the ink and writing when I can.

Hey man. It's great to see your process.
Actually, it's maybe a good thing sometimes that you're too impatient. I was actually thinking that most of the pieces you've been posting were drawn directly in ink! They're just really loose and full of life.

I love that first thumbnail. It has a great pose and I love how the right arm goes back like that.

I think the final one looks fine. He does look stumpy but I'm sure once you throw your inks there it'll look good.

Yeah there's always something lost between the tiny devil-may-care attitude of busting out a lil thumbnail, to when I actually sit and draw it for real. I wish I could bottle that looseness from the thumbnail and attack it like that when it matters. I think the larger or more finished the drawing is, the more intimidating it is, at least for me. Of course, I've also tried taking the thumbnail, blowing it up in the photocopier to the size I want and then redrawing. But it still loses...something.

alright, first off. thats a lot to read.

2nd, youre way too modest.

ive seen you draw man, from start to finish, blues to ink. and you are probably the most confident artist i've ever seen at working on poses and characters, and im even more amazed that everytime you finish, it's spot ON.

i'd be watching and and i'll be like" oh dude..no.. he's not gonna pull that off..the blues are so.. loose, how's he gonna..." then BAM< you throw down the inks and its perfect. then i say " why cant he care this much about my pencils?!" hehe

serious though, that's condifence man.. thats why i hate sitting next to you at conventions. make me look bad..

Don't believe him folks. He hates sitting next to me because he really wants more space to sell prints.

Or because I stink.

One of the two.

Or both.
