HISTORY:

Duff‘s parents met one rainy spring in the early 2000s by the seaside town of North Berwick. Evander H. Wallace was a young wizard travelling the region to collect information for his new book concerned with Scottish witch trials, Linda a local muggle waitress working for her own family‘s shabby B&B, who would bring the mysterious guest staying over a sandwich every now and then when he was huddled over his notes. Evander‘s three week stay would develop into flirting and sneaky moonlight dates with the gentle girl who in turn was enticed by the strange aura of the boy who was so different from anyone she‘s ever met before. Her traditional parents didn’t approve of the couple, despite of their conviction of belonging together and so they saw themselves urged to elope. They settled in Glasgow, far away from the quiet Linda had grown so weary off and started a new life together, marrying in a small ceremony attended by no-one but themselves and the priest.

It wasn’t long before Linda became pregnant and despite that, Evander never came around to confessing to her that he had been a wizard all along, afraid to drive her off. One day, when he embarked on one of his week-long work related travels, he didn’t return on the day he promised he would and didn’t pick up contact in any other way either. Linda grew worried, reporting to the police who couldn’t find any trace of he husband, hinting to her that he might have simply abandoned her, unwilling to be found – a theory Linda would never belive in. But weeks turned into months and little Duff was born and raised without ever knowing his father.

Linda picked up studying from home to earn a nursing degree, leaving Duff with a friendly, old lady neighbour of hers. Despite being a loving mother, her studies and later occupation were time intensive and Duff spend extended time in day-care and later school left mostly to his own devices. Being an awkward child and heavy set, it wasn’t long before he was picked out as a perfect bullying target. Made to believe that he was boring and worth nothing, his grades started dropping and he was increasingly loosing interest in anything he had ever taken interest in until he snapped some time in 4th grade, fighting back against his bully with more than just his fists. His tormentor had to be hospitalized with a broken leg and Duff suspended for a week. Although the accident was never fully cleared up and the bullying had stopped, Duff felt lonelier than ever before when he returned to school, the other children avoiding him out of fear of what else he might do.

In the summer holidays, a teacher from Hogwarts showed up in the Wallace’s small flat, bringing Duff his Hogwarts letter. For the first time in his life, Duff felt like something special, visiting Hogsmead with his mother and picking up his supplies soon after excitedly. He couldn’t wait to go to a school that seemed so much cooler than the one he was visiting before. Disenchantment came fast, however. It took Duff quite a while to adjust to the unfamiliar society he was suddenly part of and many of the theoretical subjects he was terribly lost with. The bullying resurged in certain places, though Duff had grown a thicker skin against it by then. Now in his fifth year he is faced with taking his O.W.L.s, despite a lack of motivation and drive, feeling lost in a current that he feels he has no control over.
