Description The Korbantes/Kouretes (male dwarves)
Korbantes were five rustic daimones (dwarves) appointed by Rhea to guard the infant god Zeus in a cave on Mount Ida in Crete. To keep the boy hidden from his cannibalistic father Cronus, they drowned out his cries with a frenzied dance of clashing spear and shield. The Korbantes were gods of the wild mountainside, inventors of the rustic arts of metalworking, shepherding, hunting and beekeeping. They were also the first armoured warriors and gods of the orgiastic war-dance performed by the youths of Crete and Euboea.

The Hecaterides (female dwarves)
They were five dwarves of the rustic dance. They were sisters of the Korbantes and the mothers of the Satyrs, Oread Dwarven-nymphs and Curetes.

The Dactyls (collective name)
The five sisters and five brothers were known collectively as Daktyloi (Dactyls) "Fingers"--for their number corresponded with the ten fingers of the hands--, and also Hekaterides "Marvellous Hundred"--for as a group they were endowed with a hundred fingers (ten sets of ten fingers).
The male and female Daktyloi were joined in marriage, "finger to finger", like the harmonious folding of the hands, and from their union were born the Satyroi, Oreiades, and dancing Kouretes. The Kouretes were the first dwarven tribe of the island Krete (Crete), while the Oreiades were dwarven nymphs of the mountain-forests.

*The Daimones Daktyloi-Kouretes Daimones fathered the first one hundred men of Krete. The names used to describe fathers and sons were frequently interchanged, some accounts say the Kourete-Daimones fathered the Daktyl-Men, others that the Daktylos-Daimones fathered the Kourete-Men.

However the general understanding was that the Daimones (called Daktyloi and Kouretes), fathered an early race of men (also called Daktyloi and Kouretes). These were the Silver Race of Men described by Hesiod.

An Idaean dactyl named Herakles (perhaps the earliest embodiment of the later hero) originated the Olympic Games by instigating a race among his four "finger" brothers. This Herakles was the "thumb"; his brothers were Aeonius (forefinger), Epimedes (middle finger), Iasus (ring finger/healing finger), and Idas or Acesidas (little finger).
